Breaking with the practice of parachute journalism, Belly of the Beast is pioneering a new model of collaboration among Cuban and U.S. journalists and filmmakers. Belly of the Beast fills the void of in-depth and nuanced coverage of Cuba through people-centered stories and investigative journalism that expose the political and economic interests driving U.S. policy.

About the Position

Belly of the Beast is seeking a dynamic, driven and experienced marketing professional to lead its marketing efforts and propel the visibility, reach and impact of its content. As Director of Content and Brand Marketing, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the company's marketing strategy to help bring greater awareness and understanding of the complex realities of Cuba and U.S. policy toward the island. You will collaborate closely with Belly of the Beast’s journalists, filmmakers and other creators to maximize the reach and engagement of their daily news coverage, their feature stories, interviews and other video content, and their groundbreaking long-form documentaries. You will be a key member of a spirited team of creative, passionate and principled professionals striving to make a positive impact in U.S.-Cuba relations while forging a new model of cross-border journalistic collaboration.


1.     Develop and Implement Marketing Strategy:

•  Formulate a comprehensive marketing strategy and corresponding budget aligned with Belly of the Beast's brand vision and objectives.

•  Identify target audiences and segments to tailor content distribution and marketing campaigns effectively.

•  Create marketing plans and lead the team for all content such as individual documentaries, documentary series, short-form videos and overall brand promotion.

•  Work closely with Belly of the Beast journalists, filmmakers and producers to plan and carry out content production and distribution.

•  Oversee distribution and marketing efforts, including social media management, event-planning, outreach, publicity and collaborations.

•  Work with the executive team to identify key areas of growth and personnel needs.

2.     Audience Engagement and Growth:

•  Drive audience growth across various digital platforms (website, social media, email newsletters, podcasts, etc.), and implement tools to perform these tasks.

•  Oversee speaking and screening tours, including film festival runs, as well as other live in-person and online events.

•  Oversee outreach efforts with community-based organizations, grassroots movements, advocacy groups, educational institutions and other stakeholders to maximize social impact.

3.     Brand Development and Promotion:

            •  Manage and maintain the Belly of the Beast brand identity and messaging consistency.

            •  Oversee the production of promotional materials, trailers and teasers.

            •  Help build strategic partnerships and collaborations to enhance the brand's visibility.

•  Oversee third party partners such as publicists and designers, as needed

4.     Marketing Analytics and Reporting:

•  Monitor and analyze audience data and trends to optimize marketing efforts.

•  Utilize data-driven insights to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

•  Provide regular reports to the executive team on key performance metrics and ROI.

5.     Budget Management:

•  Allocate and manage marketing budgets efficiently.

            •  Ensure cost-effectiveness and ROI for marketing initiatives.


•  Proven experience in marketing roles, ideally within the media, entertainment or documentary film industry.

•  Demonstrated success in developing and executing comprehensive marketing strategies.

•  Mastery of social media platforms, digital marketing channels and video content to maximize engagement, growth and impact.

•  Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to craft compelling marketing messages.

•  Strong communication skills for interacting with the Belly of the Beast team, its audience, partners and supporters.

•  Strong team-building, management and mentorship skills to train, motivate and effectively oversee the marketing team.

•  Analytical mindset with experience in utilizing marketing analytics and data tools.

•  Creativity, innovation and a passion for storytelling, documentary films and principled journalism.

•  Strong desire to be part of a media outlet committed to social justice and making the world a better place.

Preferred Candidates Will Possess:

•  Familiarity with Cuba and U.S.-Cuba relations or a genuine interest in the subject matter.

•  Fluency in Spanish or strong Spanish-language skills.

•  Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or a related field.

•  UX design skills to ensure that the website, content, copy and other marketing pieces are easy to navigate and use.

•  SEO and SEM skills.
