Development and Communications AmeriCorps VISTA

The VISTA at America SCORES Chicago will be part of the 2022-2023 Up2Us Sports VISTA nationwide cohort of 75 members. The VISTA will focus on building capacity and increasing stakeholder engagement and revenue growth to support the mission and scale of the organization. This role will be a hybrid role with the opportunity to work from home and the office.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in building their nonprofit career as the VISTA will have exposure to all facets of development and communications work. The specific responsibilities of the Development and Communications VISTA are as follows:

  • Social Media and Communications
  • Meet with Development Team monthly to plan the following month’s digital and print communications, such as newsletters or impact reports.
  • Create and schedule posts to SCORES’ social media accounts.
  • Compile monthly tracking reports for engagement across platforms and work with the Development Team to analyze results and determine action items as needed based off data.
  • Create and disseminate a monthly newsletter.
  • Attend all Program and Fundraising events to capture content (photos, quotes, etc.) and provide live updates. Visit at least one SCORES program site per week to capture content.
  • Internal Communications
  • Create Chicago-specific brand guides that can be used in creating social media posts, videos, newsletters, etc. that align with America SCORES Chicago’s current digital and print presence.
  • Create template in-kind donation letters for Program Staff to use when soliciting donations.
  • Grant Management
  • Update Little Green Light as needed (no less than monthly) to ensure that corporate, foundation, and individual gifts are accurately recorded.
  • Create and send donor acknowledgement letters no less than two weeks after a donation has been received. Collaborate with the Development Team to identify donors who may require additional acknowledgement.
  • Support the Development Team with the creation of materials (i.e., slide decks, reports) and other communications to update funders on program activities, solicit program sponsorship, etc.
  • Identify new and existing grant opportunities, creating a grant prospect list for the Development Team. Research and prepare grant proposals, reports, and letters of inquiry with support from the Development Team and Director of Programs and Operations.
  • Special Event Management
  • Participate and contribute to strategy and planning meetings leading up to SCORES program and fundraising events.
  • Support the DDC and Development Board in hosting Inspired Art (preferably in the Fall) and building out a sustainable work plan that can be used in the future to host the event every other year.
  • Support the DDC and Development Board in identifying a fundraising event with a goal of at least $10,000 that can be held during the years Inspired Art does not take place.
  • Create and update marketing and sponsorship materials for outreach to corporate and business partners for fundraising events.
  • Manage outreach to sponsors and businesses for silent auction items and other in-kind donations for program and fundraising events.
  • Coordinate with the DDC and ED to manage day-of logistics for all fundraising events and support the day-of logistics for program events.

The VISTA stipend is $15,001.50, paid in biweekly installments. Upon completion of the service year, the VISTA can choose between a $6,495 education stipend or $1,800 cash stipend.

Cómo aplicar

Interested applicants must submit a resume, writing sample, and cover letter to Jess Mater no later than June 24th. The cover letter should answer the following questions:

  • Why are you specifically interested in pursuing a year of service through AmeriCorps?
  • What, if any, experience do you have working in communities served by SCORES in Chicago (or similar communities in other cities)?
  • What are you hoping to gain from your VISTA experience?

Once confirmed by America SCORES Chicago, the selected applicant will need to be confirmed via the AmeriCorps eGrants portal. Per AmeriCorps VISTA requirements, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18 years or older (no upper age limit)
  • Hold one of the following citizenship or legal residency statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident (i.e. Green Card status), and persons legally residing within a state. Examples of persons legally residing within a state may include those holding the following classifications: refugee, asylee, temporary protected status throughout VISTA service, and holding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.
