Accounting Manager

THE OPPORTUNITY

Summer Search National is seeking an Accounting Manager to play an active and high touch role in ensuring our accounting processes are timely, accurate, efficient, and consistent across Summer Search’s five sites and national team.

This an exciting new position offering the opportunity to play a key role on the finance team at a dynamic multi-site national non-profit. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, the Accounting Manager will join a tenured, established, and collaborative Finance Team.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Perform monthly reconciliation of donations between development and accounting databases.
• Perform month end close, allocate shared expenses, and post journal entries to appropriate accounts, departments and projects.
• Ensure that all journal entries have adequate supporting documentation.
• Review restricted gifts and ensure timely releases based on time/purpose restriction.
• Balance Sheet Account Reconciliations, including bank reconciliations.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
• Perform various budgets to actual analyses for budget leads across National departments and 5 sites.
• Assist in the preparation of all account schedules and other requests from the external auditors for the annual financial audit, ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State and Local regulations, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) and internal policy and procedures. Perform various year-over-year variance analyses for the auditors.
• Serve as a liaison during audit fieldwork.
• Prepare grant budgets and reporting for Development staff.
• Prepare materials for the local sites finance committee meetings. Present at the local finance committee meetings when necessary.
• Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to financial management, budget and accounting.
• Provide Adaptive Insights training to new budget leads.
• Update accounting manual as necessary. 
• Provide leadership in internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization.

WHO YOU ARE

The Accounting Manager role calls for a highly organized accounting professional who approaches work with an analytical and customer-oriented mindset. Specifically, this hire will bring:

• EXPERIENCE: At least 5 years of professional experience in non-profit or fund accounting required. Experience working at headquarters at multi-site non-profit is a plus.
• PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Works in an organized manner to achieve goals and objectives. Balances competing priorities when managing projects and workflows while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• ACCOUNTABILITY: Holds self and others responsible for process, decisions, actions, and commitments to results and to drive high-quality outcomes. Is responsive to the needs of stakeholders across the network such as development staff and senior management.
• STRATEGIC THINKING: Sound judgement, with experience analyzing situations and making decisions that are informed by data and critical thinking.
• ADAPTABILITY: Ability to stay productive and solutions-oriented in the face of change and unfamiliar scenarios. You remain curious and flexible and demonstrate a willingness to learn new ways to accomplish work. Ability to understand and navigate different perspectives.
• TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: Experience with budgeting software (Adaptive Insights) and Financial Edge as well as proficiency in Excel.

LOCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS 

This is a fully remote role with the option of working part or full-time out of our National office in Oakland, California or one of our regional offices in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, or Seattle. New hires must be residing in one of their following states by their first day of employment: California, Washington, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Colorado.
