Executive Director

West End House Camp | Remote & Parsonsfield, ME | Year-Round

Background

West End House Camp is an overnight summer camp for boys located in Parsonsfield, ME. Founded in 1908 on Long Pond, West End is home to 120 campers per week during the summer with sessions ranging from 2 to 7 weeks. As a nonprofit organization, West End’s values are centered around camaraderie, teamwork, tradition, experiential outdoor learning, and personal growth. Throughout its remarkable 116 year history, West End has upheld a legacy of diversity and inclusion across race, religion, and ethnic heritage. As a core element of the business model, West End cultivates a robust camper sponsorship program that provides the opportunity to welcome boys from many different states, countries, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Position Overview

The Executive Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the nonprofit organization, inclusive of camp. Reporting to the organization's corporate officers, this role will help craft the future visioning for camp and will work closely with the Board of Trustees & Directors (“Board”) to build strategic plans that ensure long-term financial stability. As only the fourth individual to hold this coveted position in the last 75 years, this person will be a steward of West End’s cherished generational traditions and will have a meaningful impact on the organization’s evolution and future growth.

This is an executive-level position that requires a proven track record of people leadership and a deep knowledge of both the nonprofit and camp industries. The primary focus areas of this role are Camper Recruitment, Marketing, Business Operations, Sponsorship Program Development, and Fundraising. In addition, this position will manage a tenured seasonal Camp Director who oversees all camp operations and programming during the summer. With this structure, the Executive Director will work to ensure a successful summer under the direction of the Camp Director and will oversee many of the year-round planning activities, to ensure smooth camp operations and robust revenue generation.

This is a full-time, year-round position that is based remotely in the New England area throughout the year, with at least 50% of the summer spent at camp. Compensation is $90K-$130K plus benefits.

What You’ll Do

  • Create a multi-faceted marketing strategy to expand West End’s brand recognition, recruit new campers, and attract new donors. Oversee brand development activities including website design, social media, alumni engagement, local events, donor outreach, and the creation of sponsorship pitch materials and impact reports.

Fundraising & Development

  • Build and strengthen relationships with donors, foundations, and corporate partners to grow the camper sponsorship program. Identify new corporate sponsors (particularly those focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion), to subsidize the cost of campers that require financial sponsorship (currently ~50% of campers).
  • Develop and execute fundraising plans to strengthen relationships with existing donors and engage new donors within West End’s alumni network. Oversee the writing, submittal, and follow-up of grant applications.
  • Establish sponsorship evaluation criteria for determining whether campers qualify for tuition sponsorship at differing levels. Create a consistent and bias-free process for evaluating applications and maintaining appropriate records.

Nonprofit Business Operations

  • Identify innovative strategies to unlock new revenue opportunities and strengthen the long-term financial health of the organization.
  • Partner with the Board to develop strategic plans which include annual budgeting, capital planning, and visioning for programs and site upgrades.
  • Drive financial results in accordance with the annual budget and revenue targets. Demonstrate operational discipline to rigorously manage the P&L. Report financial results to the Board on a routine basis.

  • Serve on Board of Directors committees and act as a liaison between the Board and employees to communicate the messaging and priorities of the organization.

Camp Operations

  • Partner with the Camp Director to recruit, hire, train, develop, and supervise a diverse team of staff members, including camp counselors, program coordinators, and administrative staff.
  • Meticulously manage compliance requirements of federal, state, local and ACA agencies to ensure constant good standing. Oversees annual audit process.
  • Oversee the maintenance staff and physical premises of camp. Work with the Board’s Facilities Committee and maintenance staff to manage capital projects and maintenance upkeep of the property.
  • Collaborate with the Camp Director on summer programming and operating schedules to ensure the organization remains competitive and attractive while balancing the organization’s rich history of tradition.
