The South Street Seaport Museum, located in the heart of the South Street Seaport Historic District in New York City, preserves and interprets the history of New York as a great port city. Founded in 1967, and designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum in 1998, the Museum houses an extensive collection of works of art and artifacts, a maritime reference library, exhibition galleries, and education spaces, working nineteenth-century print shops, and an active fleet of historic vessels to provide interactive exhibits and experiences to tell the story of “Where New York Begins.”
The Seaport Museum is seeking a creative, passionate, and strategic Director of Marketing and Communications responsible for the South Street Seaport Museum’s institutional marketing plans and public communications about exhibitions, programs, and events in a fast-moving environment. This position reports to the Vice President for External Affairs and works in collaboration with the Senior Designer.
· Create and execute an annual marketing calendar for the Seaport Museum’s exhibitions, programming, and institutional news and events
· Manage print, digital, and email campaigns, including a bi-weekly institutional e-newsletter
· Collaborate with the Senior Designer to produce physical collateral and all on-site wayfinding signage
· Work interdepartmentally in the execution of complementary communication plans and CRM strategies
· Create unique and engaging social media content and campaigns: write posts, capture and edit photo and video content. Monitor social media postings across all channels, communicate with audiences and share community content through these platforms
· Create digital advertising materials including copywriting, video editing, and fulfillment on all advertising platforms with design support from the Senior Designer
· Coordinate media planning and buying for digital display campaigns, Google Adwords, Google display campaigns, Facebook campaigns, and list trades/purchases while utilizing data to make promotion optimization decisions
· Maintain the Seaport Museum’s website, overseeing enhancements, updating written and media content, and tracking user experience using analytics
· Support Peek, the Museum’s ticketing resource, to manage the on-site and digital purchasing experience in conjunction with the VX, Development, and Accounting departments
· Work with out-of-house partners including press representatives, digital marketing firms, videographers, and photographers
· Manage the annual marketing budget including revenue and expenses
· Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience
· Familiarity with nonprofit cultural organizations preferred
· Must be highly-motivated and organized with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and excellent organizational and scheduling skills
· Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities and projects at once, be detail-oriented, and work well under deadline.
· Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff members, external contacts, and volunteers at all levels.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
· Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; knowledge of WordPress; and proficiency with ticketing or CRM systems.
· Must be able to lift 25lbs, go up and downstairs, and walk around the Museum campus, in all weather.
