Organizational Context: The American Sociological Association (ASA) is a nonprofit membership association dedicated to serving sociologists in their work, advancing sociology as a science and profession, and promoting the contributions and use of sociology to society. ASA’s national office is located in Washington, D.C, but staff is working 100% remotely at present. The return to office work plan (tentatively to begin in January) includes a vaccination policy and flexibility for remote work part of the week.

Reporting Structure: The Assistant reports to the Director of Research, Professional Development, and Academic Affairs.

Job Classification: Non-Exempt

Essential Functions: 

·        Provide administrative support for all programs related to Research, Professional Development, and Academic Affairs (RPA), including the Department Affiliates Program, ASA Program Reviewers and Consultants, the High School Program, Student Forum, ASA Retirement Network, and Research.

·        Provide administrative support in the planning and delivery of Annual Meeting events.

·        Help create and deliver periodic virtual events such as webinars.

·        Organize applications to the Howery Teaching Enhancement Fund grant program and support the committee that selects grant awardees.

·        Provide administrative support to committees and task forces for which the Director of RPA is the staff liaison.

·        Serve as the TRAILS Editorial Assistant, working in close collaboration with the Assistant Director of RPA and the TRAILS editor. TRAILS is the ASA’s online, peer-reviewed repository of teaching and learning materials for sociology.

·        Work with the communications team to develop and distribute information regarding RPA activities through channels such as newsletters and social media.

·        Respond to relevant requests for assistance from members and staff.

·        Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of RPA.


Preferred Qualifications:

·        B.A. in social science or related discipline.

·        Creative thinker.

·        Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects and tasks at once with attention to detail.

·        Effective written and verbal communication.

·        Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

·        Skilled in Microsoft Office.

·        Adept at learning new software.

Compensation: Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. A full benefits package is provided to all ASA staff members.
