Founded in 1966, UPROSE , Brooklyn's oldest Latino community-based organization is a women of color led intergenerational, multi-racial, nationally- recognized community organization that works at the intersection of racial justice and climate change in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and beyond. We achieve our just transition goals in part, through community organizing, policy, leadership development, and cultural / artistic expression.

UPROSE works with community members and institutions, governmental agencies, technical assistance partners, and private stakeholders to advance a Just Transition away from fossil fuels and toward a renewable energy economy. UPROSE seeks a Community Resilience Coordinator to support community projects and initiatives in Sunset Park, Brooklyn as programming for UPROSE’s Climate Justice Center (CJC). This includes coordinating and conducting outreach according to the CJC’s programs and campaigns calendar; organizing and facilitating community meetings and educational workshops and learning circles; leading strategies to support and expand the CJC’s base; and supporting educational campaigns around Environmental Justice, Climate Justice, and a Just Transition. The Community Resilience Coordinator will support community-led climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilience efforts to achieve the CJC’s goals. 

Responsibilities:

  • Report and work closely with the UPROSE Community Environmental Scientist and Executive Director
  • Work with community stakeholders on project development and implementation; 
  • Develop and coordinate the CJC’s curriculum and activities calendar to support educational campaigns around Environmental Justice, Climate Justice and Just Transition; 
  • Develop outreach tools/materials and manage database contact information;  
  • Work with the Climate Justice Organizer on coordinated outreach strategies for projects and programs;
  • Coordinate meetings with UPROSE’s members through the Climate Justice Center’s campaigns and programs; 
  • Facilitate community planning/education workshops on possible resilience projects and programs; 
  • Help carry out media strategies to raise awareness about issues and build support for our organizing as needed;
  • Represent the organization at coalition meetings, public hearings, community meetings, and other public forums as needed;
  • Assist with fundraising, grant writing and reporting as needed; 
  • Other community organizing responsibilities as necessary.

Job requirements:

  • Demonstrated commitment to Environmental Justice, Social Justice and Climate Justice issues;
  • Knowledge of Environmental, Social and Climate Justice issues affecting frontline communities, communities of color and low-income communities;
  • Minimum of 1-2 years professional experience relevant to outlined responsibilities
  • Proven experience in coordinating and facilitating meetings and working with grassroots intergenerational communities of color;
  • Experience promoting issues and policy objectives;
  • Ability to work independently or in a collaborative team-setting;
  • Excellent written/oral communications skills;
  • Comfortable giving public presentations;
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office applications, Adobe applications, Google Drive functions, etc. 
  • Spanish/English bilingual proficiency preferred;

This is a full-time position that provides a benefits package and professional development opportunities.. Candidates must be able to work in a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and after Covid occasional travel.
