The Whitney Museum seeks an Associate Manager of Access and Inclusion to manage the Museum’s programs for people with disabilities and advise on accessible practices across the institution. The Associate Manager works with staff from various departments and serves as the Whitney’s in-house advocate and expert on accessibility providing guidance, training, and resources for all museum areas and staff. The Associate Manager will work closely with the Director of Social Impact to make the Whitney a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment for disabled and non-disabled people of all backgrounds. This position reports directly to the Director of Social Impact.

Responsibilities:

●   Coordinate museum-wide efforts to advance access and inclusion across the Museum in collaboration with education staff and other departments, in particular Visitor Experience, Curatorial, Digital Media, Graphic Design and Human Resources.

●   Contribute to broad institutional efforts to position the Museum as a welcoming, relevant, and accessible resource for people who have traditionally experienced barriers to participation in cultural institutions.

●   Work with the Director of Social Impact and colleagues across the Education department to generate and develop accessible and inclusive programming that explores the richness and complexity of American Art.

●   Manage development, coordination, and implementation of accessible virtual and in-person educational programs on and off-site for diverse audiences with physical, sensory, developmental, and cognitive disabilities.

●   Expand and deepen existing public offerings for visitors with disabilities such as Family Fun for Kids on the Autism Spectrum, Verbal Description and Touch Tours, and Whitney Signs.

●   Mentor, evaluate, and support the Access Programs team of educators, interns, and volunteers.

●   Work in collaboration with the Director of Social Impact to manage departmental budgets, reporting, program evaluation, planning, and marketing efforts.

●   Work collaboratively across departments to ensure institutional ADA and Section 504 compliance for the Whitney’s programs, collection, exhibitions, facilities, and website.

●   Oversee the production of accessible materials and accommodations for Whitney exhibitions and digital media projects, including large print materials, transcripts, captioning, sound descriptions, and more.

●   Foster strong relationships within the local community and contribute to audience outreach initiatives.

●   Maintain email communications with our audiences and communities through the development of e-blasts advertising upcoming programs, and by regularly replying to inquiries that come to the AccessFeedback mailbox.

●   Maintain assistive equipment, such as assistive listening devices, on-site at the Museum.

●   Manage partnerships with community-based organizations, develop a network of key stakeholders in the disability community and serve as a liaison to the Whitney Education Community Advisory Network (WECAN).

●   Grow and maintain good relationships with Whitney Community and Senior Partner organizations.

Qualifications:

●   B.A./M.A. degree in disability studies, education, museum studies, studio art, art history, or a related field. Or equivalent experience. 

●   At least two years of demonstrated experience in community-based arts programming, museum education and gallery teaching as well as knowledge of disability law and regulations, museum access programming and contemporary artistic practice.

●   3-4 years working within and among communities, especially disability communities, in personal and/or professional settings.

●   Experience in research, outreach, accessibility, and/or community arts education.

●   Fluency or proficiency in ASL is a plus. 

●   Working knowledge of the ADA and Section 504 compliance; experience in best practices of universal design.

●   Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

This is a regular full-time exempt position. The Whitney offers a full benefits package including medical, dental, and vision care. Other benefits include a 403B with employer contribution, transportation benefits and free admission to most Museums nationally.
