The Editorial Manager oversees development and delivery of the association’s editorial and promotional content. They also review the association’s internal and external communications content to ensure that it is in line with the association’s mission, as well as the association’s strategic vision and organizational goals. This position is directly responsible for production and promotion related to Our Children magazine, the annual report and editorial style guide. The manager also writes scripts and speeches for National PTA events and the association’s president, executive director and other national level PTA leaders. This position manages the Writer, Editorial Specialist, as well as vendors and contractors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Produce Our Children digital and printed magazine and related promotions, which includes:

  • Developing and managing an editorial calendar
  • Researching, interviewing, writing and editing content
  • Coordinating with magazine contributors and freelancers
  • Tracking and fulfilling advertising commitments
  • Managing translation, design, printing, online posting and delivery
  • Working directly with the contracted graphic designer and print vendor on the design, production and delivery of the annual print issue
  • Evaluating readership and responding to reader questions and needs
  • Generating strategies to improve readership

Produce the scripts and run of shows for several National PTA events, which includes:

  • Speechwriting for National PTA’s president, president-elect and executive director
  • Writing and revising the scripts and run of shows for PTA events
  • Leading script reviews with event teams and leadership
  • Managing rehearsals and recordings and onsite sessions/events with leadership

Produce National PTA’s annual reporting, which includes:

  • Developing a creative brief and content outline in collaboration with National PTA executives and leadership volunteers
  • Researching, writing and editing content
  • Managing the design, production and dissemination

OTHER KEY ROLES

  • Supervise the writing, editing, design and dissemination of e-newsletters and e-blasts
  • Manage the annual budget for magazine, e-marketing and other editorial projects
  • Follow the Communications Team process and workflow for projects and tasks
  • Manage the regular review and update of the association’s Style Guide for staff use
  • Work with the president, president-elect and executive director to draft speeches to internal and external audiences
  • Manage translation vendors that handle translations for the association (in multiple languages)
  • Support the development and execution of communications and marketing plans
  • Assist in media relations efforts as needed
  • Collaborate with subject-matter experts to ensure the accuracy of content and with graphic designers to improve the visual presentation of information
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

  • Writing and Communications: Superior writing and editing skills, as well as excellent interviewing and research skills. Proficiency in AP writing style and familiar with education, health, parenting and/or advocacy-related topics and concepts. Need for a keen attention to detail.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage a project from concept to completion on deadline, within budget and on strategy. Knowledge on how to set a production schedule and coordinate with project colleagues and vendors to ensure the project is on track. Able to juggle multiple demands, manage shifting priorities and meet deadlines. Need advanced skills in Office 365 and Google Drive and WordPress.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration: Need a strong team player who can work cohesively with staff, volunteers, sponsors and partner organizations, with a flexible and solutions-oriented approach to projects and tasks. Experience and success in working with executives and leadership volunteers and a proven record of developing relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing or related field is required
  • 5-7 years of professional experience as a writer or editor
  • Previous experience managing the production of publications
  • Previous experience managing vendors and employees

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in a professional office environment and remotely, currently in a hybrid structure. The incumbent should plan on partial or full in-person work for this position.
  • The position may require occasional evening and weekend work for special programs and/or events
  • Incumbent routinely uses standard office equipment including computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.
  • This is a largely sedentary role. Routine activities and special events may require the ability to lift files, packages, and related materials weighing up to 20 lbs. and to bend or stand as necessary
  • Position located in NPTA, Alexandria, VA headquarters and requires occasional travel domestically.
