Job Title: Chief of Staff

Location: Remote

Reports To: CEO

Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Founded in 2007, the National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR) is a nonprofit organization committed to accelerating student achievement through the development and support of high-performing teacher residencies. Position Summary:

The Chief of Staff provides critical leadership and oversight for internal operations, strategic planning, and external relations. This role supervises key team members, manages strategic initiatives, and works closely with the CEO and Leadership Team to ensure effective execution of organizational goals. The Chief of Staff will also support the Board of Directors and ensure compliance with governance requirements while proactively cultivating a values-centered culture.

Responsibilities:

Internal Support (50%)

  • Supervise the Managing Director of Policy and Director of Marketing/Communications.
  • Manage NCTR's strategic planning process, including annual priority-setting and overseeing multi-year strategic goals.
  • Monitor progress and facilitate communication across departments to ensure alignment and execution of the strategic plan.
  • Support the CEO in managing board relations, including preparing agendas, developing meeting materials, and ensuring compliance with by-laws.
  • Serve on the leadership team, providing strategic advice and partnership with other senior leaders.
  • Participate in regular team activities, such as weekly team meetings, bi-annual retreats, and organizational learning initiatives.
  • Foster a values-centered culture that aligns with NCTR’s mission and core values.

Government Relations (20%)

  • Coordinate government relations strategies with board members, associations, and external agencies.
  • Develop and disseminate advocacy materials, including legislative summaries, factsheets, and policy recommendations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing/Communications to create public relations materials and manage social media strategies related to policy and external communications.

External Relations (20%)

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive outreach strategy to communicate the impact of NCTR and its programs to a broad audience.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director of Policy to build and nurture strategic partnerships to enhance NCTR’s policy and advocacy efforts while supporting teacher residency sustainability.
  • Represent NCTR at key conferences, panels, and meetings, positioning the organization as a national leader in teacher education reform.

Other Duties (10%)

  • Participate in organization-wide committees, such as Sunshine, Affinity Groups, DEI, and Hiring committees.
  • Manage miscellaneous projects as assigned by the CEO.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in business administration, public administration, education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior leadership role within a nonprofit or educational environment, with direct supervisory responsibilities.
  • The candidate should have a proven track record in improving access and educational conditions for marginalized populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic plans and manage senior-level staff.
  • Minimum 5+ years of prior experience in government relations and/or policy/advocacy
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Proven track record in fostering an inclusive workplace that encourages and supports diversity.

Benefits and Salary:

  • This is a fully remote position with occasional travel to Chicago, IL. The salary range for this position is $170,000 to $200,000
