    Program Director for Innovative Summer Camp

    We are seeking a Program Director for Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms (SCHF) at our campus in Livingston Manor, NY; during Summer 2025. The job is a full time contract position. SCHF seeks a Program Director with experience creating programs and a passion for working with youth

    About Steve’s Camp:

    Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms offers middle and high school students from systematically nature-deprived NYC communities a no-cost, fun and enriching sleep-away camp experience on a farm in the Catskills.

    About this position:

    Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms seeks an energetic, socially conscious Program Director for our summer program for New York City teens. The Program Director reports to the Camp Director and directly manages 6 Counselors per session as well as 3 Activities Coordinators. A private room with a shared bathroom is provided on our 100 acre campus in the Catskills. Transportation is provided via bus from New York City if relocating for the summer.

    Camp consists of four 12-day sessions. During this time, the Program Director will oversee and execute the creation and implementation of the Program at camp. They will be directly responsible for campers and staff conduct, discipline, health, and safety. They will supervise, collaborate with and lead Senior and Junior Counselors. The Program Director will be responsible for ensuring the program provides campers with an enriching experience at camp.

    These are the main areas of work for the Program Director, but like any position that involves working with young people, no two days are the same. That is part of the appeal that draws so many of us to this field. The Program Director will be faced with different scenarios and new challenges, and will be expected to be flexible, communicative, know when to ask for support from other senior staff, and be graceful under pressure.

    We are seeking a dynamic individual who can:

    • Oversee activities and the daily schedule
    • Direct management of counselors and schedule daily meetings and topics after breakfast
    • Ensure that programs are executed each day throughout the summer
    • Live alongside fellow staff and be responsible for the safety and well-being of 50 campers and counselors at any given time.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Curriculum design and planning:
      • Collaborate with senior staff and the Camp Director to deliver a fun, yet challenging program to campers focused on specific content areas based on interest and experience
      • Help develop materials list of supplies needed for program areas and collaborate with Camp Director to ensure supplies are ordered and organized prior to the start of camp
      • Ensure daily activities are well-run, staff are engaged with the campers, activity areas are prepared and cleaned, activities are running on time and implementing the agreed upon activities
      • Manage the equipment/materials used during the various activities including sports, crafts, and program-specific and other equipment as the need arises.
      • Provide dynamic and new ongoing program ideas.
      • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders.
    • Camp Leadership
      • Assist in the supervision of all programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities.
      • Lead daily staff meetings to discuss the next day’s schedule.
      • Assisting staff with issues they may be facing with campers and/or themselves.
      • Communicate and reinforce expectations for camper behavior
      • Model patience, understanding, compassion, and enthusiasm for staff and campers
      • Collaborate with senior staff to develop staff training that includes an overview of camp curriculum and helps junior staff develop key communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
      • Communicate via daily debriefings with the Camp Director

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field: (Education, Social Work Psychology, Counseling) or commensurate work experience in the non-profit sector

    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Able to perform physical aspects of the position, including:
      • Working long hours in an active camp program
      • Identify and respond to environmental and other hazards
      • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
    • Meets state and federal requirements for summer camp employment. Must pass a background check and provide other forms and details.
    • Familiar with google workspace, ability to create spreadsheets, documents, forms
    • Planning, prioritization, organization and execution skills
    • Strong culture and relationship builder who actively engages and builds staff and campers.
    • Ability to work, lead, support and encourage team

    TIMEFRAME AND SALARY:

    This is a temporary full time contract position. The salary per session is $2,250.00. There are four 12 day sessions this summer. Applicants may chose to apply for all four sessions or for the first two or last two sessions.

    • Session 1: June 28 - July 9 - Boys Middle School
    • Session 2: July 12 - July 23 - Boys Middle School
    • Session 3: July 26 - Aug 6 - Girls Middle School
    • Session 4: Aug 9 - Aug 20 - Girls Middle School

    There is a week of onsite required training from June 19 - 25. A stipend, room and board will be provided for the training.
