Overall Job Description:

The Basics is a community-level initiative to improve early childhood outcomes, including kindergarten readiness, based on five evidence-based parenting and caregiving pillars that promote high-quality social and emotional development for children from birth-age 5. These pillars are: (1) Maximize love, manage stress; (2) Talk, sing, and point; (3) Count, group, and compare; (4) Explore through movement and play; and (5) Read and discuss stories. The Basics relies on outreach through spatial targeting (place-based), community outreach (people-focused), and sectorial targeting (identifying places where children and their families pay, play, and pray).

In Montgomery County, the Collaboration Council serves as the backbone organization for The Basics MoCo and as such is responsible for convening and supporting local direct service agencies and organizations implementing The Basics and also for activating the five County-wide hubs. Starting in July 2024, The Basics MoCo will transition from a pilot to a County-wide initiative. To support this growth and innovation, the Collaboration Council seeks its first full-time, bilingual (English/Spanish) Coordinator for The Basics MoCo.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Invigorate the respective roles of the backbone organization, implementing partners, and County partner to build foundation for a County-wide movement by orienting new partners and developing Memoranda of Understanding with existing partners. The Basics Coordinator is responsible for convening partners and facilitating information sharing.
  • Build upon the Pilot’s emphasis on spatial targeting, community outreach and awareness, and sectorial targeting by activating 5 geographically diverse hubs with educational materials, community outreach, and themed activities around The Basics principles.
  • Develop sustainable communication and accompanying evaluation plans that may include in-person presentations, social media campaigns, transit advertising, and large-scale public service announcement campaigns.
  • Meet with Early Care and Education (ECE) practitioners and experts (public and private sector) to ensure that The Basics complements their existing curriculum and includes their input and partnership.
  • Serve as contract monitor and liaison with County funders at the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Provide administrative and operational support for The Basics MoCo
  • Maintain up-to-date resource library for implementing partners and up-to-date presence on social media and website

More about The Basics:

The Basics originated in Boston, Massachusetts, with Founder Dr. Ronald Ferguson, an economist who recognized that the most impactful period in a person’s life is their first five years. The Basics provides handouts and videos and implementation guides to help communities to teach parents/caregivers about the five pillars and their importance to children’s growth and learning. The Basics also has a texting service called “Basic Insights” that provides multi-lingual, easy to implement, child development facts, activities, and other ways to support infants and young children that complement the other Basics resources. The Basics is free to families and has been successful in reaching families and improving outcomes for children who may never attend any formal early learning setting as it teaches parents/caregivers how to incorporate learning into everyday activities. The Basics has local sites in over 50 communities in the United States and abroad. The local affiliates share resources and best practices for amplifying The Basics 5 principles through The Basics Learning Network (BLN), an international community made up of all the localities implementing the initiative.

Qualifications and Attributes of a Strong Candidate:

• Expertise in Early Care and Education (ECE) policy and/or service provision

• Experience working with and for families with young children (age 0-5)

• Fluent in both Spanish and English

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with
