Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA), a nationally recognized nonprofit organization, works through direct services, caregiver education, grassroots advocacy, and collaborative research to improve the quality of life for family, partner and friend caregivers of adults living with chronic, disabling health conditions. FCA staff actively seeks out innovative solutions to caregiver challenges and engages in the use of technology to expand our service reach.

FCA has an immediate opening for a Policy Specialist who: Will be responsible for developing and disseminating information on best practices and policies in family caregiver support locally, statewide, and nationally for long-term care.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, write and edit a monthly electronic newsletter with 15-25 summaries on caregiving and long-term care legislation, policy, and programs in the 50 states and nationally for an audience of over 22,000 leaders in the aging and disability world.
  • Provide staff support to the California Family Caregiver Coalition in partnership with the University of Southern California (start date January 2022).
  • Monitor state and federal activities in caregiving and home and community-based care through email subscriptions, attending webinars and conferences, literature reviews and direct contact with state and federal agencies, researchers, non-profit agencies, and businesses
  • Write and edit policy briefs, blog posting and other types of reports on current events related to caregiving issues
  • Track state and federal legislation related to caregiving and long-term care, read, summarize, and post summaries (and updates) of state and federal legislation to FCA website, and regularly update and maintain the Policy and Advocacy section of FCA’s Innovations Clearinghouse with information about those bills and related policy reports and research
  • Provide technical assistance to a variety of audiences, including, community-based organizations, coalitions, interest groups, journalists, researchers, and students.
  • Promote goals of FCA by developing relationships with state and national policymakers, associations, and advocates in caregiving and long-term care; Participate as representative of FCA in national and state coalitions.
  • Represent agency at national meetings and conferences, including making presentations
  • Assist in strategic planning, developing proposals, and writing grants for new ventures
  • Help manage various projects, tracking deadlines and the production of deliverables
  • Load Policy Digest newsletter content into Constant Contact and upload to FCA website.
  • Prepare reports as requested, including grant progress reports

Requirements:

  • Strong writing skills, with experience in quickly familiarizing oneself with new topics, identifying key points, and sharing this information with a broader audience.
  • Minimum of 3 years' work experience in public policy analysis in a government, research, or consulting setting
  • Master’s degree in public policy, public health, social welfare, gerontology, or a related field
  • Thorough understanding of the needs of family caregivers, support services and programs, and long-term care issues
  • Strong research and analytic skills, and ability to investigate a variety of issues
  • Expertise in electronic communication and research
  • Computer proficiency and familiarity with web-based databases
  • Ability to work independently on concurrent multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to handle fast turn-around assignments and technical assistance requests
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills, including the ability to translate complex ideas into clear and concise concepts
  • Commitment to the NCC’s mission
  • Work in-person in Northern California locations (primarily SF Bay Area and Sacramento)
  • Knowledge of Congress and familiarity with federal legislative process a plus

Salary and Benefits:

  • $60K - $70K depending on experience and education
