First Peoples Worldwide (First Peoples) is an Indigenous-led organization that translates on-the-ground impacts of investment affecting Indigenous Peoples to corporate decision makers. Having started the flywheel of Indigenous-centered corporate engagement in the 1990s, First Peoples Worldwide is a leader in deploying strategies to move the market towards respect for Indigenous People’s rights through the intersection of business, law, and finance. By building the business case for Indigenous Peoples’ rights and wellbeing, First Peoples increases corporate accountability, facilitates investor engagement aligned with Indigenous priorities, and supports Indigenous leadership to achieve self-determined economic goals. First Peoples Worldwide is housed at the University of Colorado Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies (CNAIS) within the Graduate School and is guided by an external Advisory Board.
The Shareholder Advocacy Coordinator works with First Peoples staff, external collaborators, and investors who are seeking to improve corporate practices on Indigenous People’s rights to establish the “Indigenous” in Environmental Social Governance (ESG) reporting, and to drive corporate practices to prioritize Indigenous Peoples’ perspectives, rights, and priorities. The Coordinator will work with the Investors and Indigenous Peoples Working Group (IIPWG) and Securing Indigenous Rights in the Green Economy (SIRGE) Coalition to address current challenges facing Indigenous Peoples globally via shareholder advocacy, corporate engagement, research and resource development, and by supporting participation by Indigenous leaders at IIPWG and other investment and finance industry events.
