Leadership Greater Chicago (LGC) is the region’s premier civic leadership development incubator, delivering the knowledge and network to lead bold, transformative change. LGC convenes, connects, and mobilizes the area’s most promising leaders around key socioeconomic issues through dynamic education and experiential activities. These diverse individuals represent the most prominent corporate, nonprofit, government, and education organizations.

Since its founding in 1983 by The Chicago Community Trust, LGC has developed more than 1,200 leaders through its Signature Fellows Program –– an intensive 10-month exploration of current socioeconomic issues that provides the foundation for a lifelong commitment to civic engagement. Fellows learn from a diversity of opinions, styles, and world views, and develop the capacity to approach and break down complex problems to drive transformative change in effective and collaborative ways.

Last year, LGC launched The Daniel Burnham Fellowship – an accelerated civic onboarding experience for senior executives who in their roles are able to play a part in shaping the future of Chicago. While beneficial to any executive, it is especially beneficial for those who are new to Chicago and provides a rich introduction to an executive new to their role and with market facing responsibilities. The Fellowship is designed to inspire these leaders to mobilize and exert their combined influence and intellect to positively impact Chicago, its future, and the continued economic progress of the region. To date, nearly 50 C-suite executives have participated in this innovative leadership experience.


LGC is seeking a full-time Director of Operations and Development to join our team. We are looking for a polished, hard-working, self-starting, flexible individual to join our team. We work hard and with excellence because we believe in our work, and we know we are making a difference. So, most importantly, a successful candidate will be committed to civic leadership development and open to wearing multiple hats. Our organization is expanding, and we need an experienced nonprofit operations and development expert who can contribute to the evolution of LGC and its long-term direction, ensure development and delivery of strategic planks support the mission and strategic vision, and help strengthen our infrastructure and position us for fast, sustainable, and impact-driven growth.

The Director of Operations and Development reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and is responsible for the following key function areas:


  • Manage upgrades and oversight of CRM system, reporting capabilities, data procurement and engagement strategies, mobile functionality, and procedure manuals/documents; organize and conduct team training sessions as needed
  • Create suite of analytics tools to show institutional KPIs, measures, and metrics that provide actionable, data-driven insights to leadership to best support Fellow engagement and preferences, drive performance, and inform strategic decisions
  • Manage IT vendor relationship to ensure all platforms are secure, understood, and integrated where applicable
  • Manage day-to-day office operations (virtual), equipment, and potential return to office space
  • Advise and implement human resources systems/policies (e.g., employee handbook)
  • Manage onboarding of new LGC team members and new LGC/LFA Board members
  • Manage and enhance internal systems: institutional reporting, documentation, cloud storage, and archives
  • Drive strategic direction and build of overhaul of LGC website in collaboration with COO, Senior Marketing & Communications Manager, and web/design partners to deliver a site that is user-friendly, mobile-friendly, accessible, on brand, and modern


  • Upgrade, implement, and manage an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures, with COO involvement
  • Manage monthly validation of accounts payable, coding of expenses and revenue, and delivery of monthly statements, with COO oversight
  • Manage operations expense budget of $1.7M+, with COO involvement
  • Plan and manage annual audit and tax filing, with COO involvement
  • Manage all compliance


  • Coordinate and execute the annual budget process


  • In collaboration with COO, design and execute annual appeal campaign, including Day of Giving and class competition led by the Leadership Fellows Association (LFA) Board; provide data, tools, and resources to class representatives to support solicitation efforts
  • Manage and enhance donor stewardship efforts
  • Develop and manage planned giving program, with COO involvement
  • Develop and manage donor journey maps to capture experiences, needs, and interest to deepen engagement and support
  • Secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Track, develop, maintain, and cultivate ongoing relationships with major donors/sponsors
  • Develop and track proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising

  • 7-10 years of work experience minimum
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree is a plus
  • Background/experience in project management, operations management, website infrastructure, database management, budget development and management, and fundraising
  • Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit compliance
