Miracle of Innocence seeks an experienced Executive Director to lead our team alongside our passionate founders. You'll be a collaborator at heart, working closely with the founders to uphold their vision and translate it into strategic action. Position Summary

This Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and will be responsible for the general management and leadership of the organization to ensure it is professionally and efficiently organized and administered. He/She will work closely with the Board to build infrastructure, institute a planning and communication process, and develop essential strategies for operations, programs, public relations and fundraising. Similar to a business start-up, this position requires a dynamic individual who can balance their role as a leader and visionary with hands-on efforts and action. By upholding the vision of MoI, the Executive Director will ensure the organization remains true to its mission and core values.

Job Responsibilities

Organizational Administration

  • Staff, Board, and Volunteer Recruitment: Recruit, motivate and inspire staff, Board members, and volunteers to work collaboratively toward MoI’s vision and goals. 
  • Operations: Oversee all aspects of daily operations, including program development, staff and volunteer management, and financial sustainability.
  • Organizational Culture: Establish a dynamic culture that embodies MoI’s values of alleviating the injustice and suffering of the wrongly incarcerated. This will require empathy for the wrongly convicted and the recently exonerated throughout the organization.
  • Board Collaboration: Ensure effective communication and follow through with the Board, leading to a deeply engaged board focused on building and executing a multi-year plan focused on fundraising efforts, community engagement and brand awareness.
  • Policy Development: Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organization.
  • Fiscal Planning: In partnership with the Board, engage in long-term fiscal planning to provide for the fiscal stability of the organization.
  • Budget Management: In partnership with the Board and Finance, develop annual budgets and manage the budget to ensure that MoI remains financially viable and has the resources to meet current and projected program growth.

Program Administration

  • Legal Defense Program: Work with the Legal Defense Team to research and identify new cases, and the case attorneys to manage active cases and related expenses.
  • Exoneree Care Program: Work with social workers and Exoneree Care Team to provide care and support for individuals recently released from prison.


Fundraising and Community Development

  • Relationship Development: Oversight with the Director of Development to establish and cultivate relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation donors to secure new donors and retain a stable community of major donors and partners.
  • Community Development: Build and cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders in the Kansas City community and across the country, including board members, donors, partner organizations, and legal agencies.
  • Public Speaking: Increase awareness and support for the organization by developing and overseeing MoI public speaking opportunities including the role of spokesperson sharing the mission of MoI for large and small audiences, locally and nationally.
  • Fundraising Planning: Oversee the design and implementation of a fundraising plan, in conjunction with the Board and the Director of Development, that includes overall engagement, fundraising strategies, and recommendations of funding sources (events, donors, grants, etc..)  to ensure necessary growth in revenue
  • Media Relationship Development: Cultivate relationships with appropriate media and provide oversight for MoI’s presence in social media. Seek contact with media, finding opportunities to promote the agenda of the organization and increase public awareness of MoI’s mission in ways which will motivate them to support organizational operations, goals, and objectives.
  • Events: Oversee annual fundraising events, including the annual Gala and identify opportunities for future/new events for fundraising.
  • Fundraising Systems: Oversee the management of donor recognition and stewardship policies and procedures with support from the Director of Development.


Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree is required; a graduate degree or working experience in criminal justice or law is highly desirable
  • Minimum of 10 years in a strong leadership position
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit leadership 
  • Strong understanding of non-profit governance and best practices.
  • Experience working effectively with a Board and engaging their talents in the work of the organization
  • Ability to inspire and motivate a team and volunteers.
  • Strong management and organizational skills, business sense and financial acumen
  • Excellent oral, written, analytic, organizational, planning, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and donor databases
  • Ability to speak authentically about MoI and its mission of social justice through demonstrated public speaking expertise
  • Demonstrated success raising major gifts from a variety of sources including individuals, corporations and foundations
  • Experience working in the Kansas City community is a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, as well as being able to travel to meet donors and attend functions. Some overnight travel may be required
