The Hort seeks a Director of Public Programs to plan and execute public programming out of the Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park Greenhouse and Education Center and at additional public spaces around the city. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, high-energy, entrepreneurial, result-driven individual with a strong background in community engagement, environmental science, agriculture/horticulture, and/or food security. Demonstrated success building programs and events at cultural institutions or CBOs to serve both the local and broader community is required.
The Director of Public Programs reports to the Executive Director and collaborates closely with the Sr. Director of Horticulture and the Directors of Education, Special Projects and Horticultural Therapy. The Director of Public Programs is responsible for the execution of The Hort’s strategic plan for public engagement and education, including: overseeing the plant and garden exhibition and learning garden areas at the Education Center to ensure their relevance to the public and school-based education; developing and implementing a robust calendar of programming from the Center and other Hort service sites such as public plazas; collaborating with the Director of Education to ensure that the Center can serve students and their teachers from the public schools in the surrounding community, and directing the Center manager and horticultural manager, volunteers, and educators shared with the school-based education department. The Director of Public Programs also serves as a member of The Hort’s leadership team.
- Build partnerships with community stakeholders, including community leaders, city council members, healthcare and human service organizations, government entities, youth development organizations, and local food-related businesses primarily in the West Harlem area.
-Develop and oversee implementation of annual programming calendar that includes drop-in and weekend programs, classes, workshop series, youth apprenticeships, and public events.
-Oversee efficient operation of the Center and the learning garden
-Supervise the Education Center Manager and the Greenhouse & Garden Manager
-Manage the development of a volunteer program for community members out of the Center
-Work with the Executive Director and other members of the leadership team to implement The Hort’s strategic plan for public engagement and education.
-Work to design exhibition and program areas at the Center
-Partner with the Senior Grant Writer and Development team to write proposals, program funding initiatives and opportunities and seek additional revenue streams.
-Direct budget development and reporting requirements.
-Other tasks as assigned
-Current network of contacts in the West Harlem community
-Fluent in English and Spanish
-Highly organized with proven ability to meet deadlines and budgets
-Outstanding leadership skills and ability to lead cross-functional teams
-Ability to take ownership of all tasks and manage them simultaneously
-Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
-Outstanding verbal communication and superior writing skills
-5+ years in a public facing programs position
-Proof of Covid-19 vaccination
-Ability to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to approximately 40 pounds
-Comfort working seated at a desk and on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
-Employment Classification: Full-Time Regular
-Salary Range: $65,000 to $75,000
-Primary Worksite Location: Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park in West Harlem, New York
