Restorative Justice Coordinator Job Description


SUMMARYThe STOP Restorative Justice (RJ) Coordinator will work to build restorative justice peace building capacity and a culture of restorative justice practice at schools in Woodlawn and surrounding neighborhoods. The RJ Coordinator will hold: RJ trainings, circles, and events. The RJ coordinator will train and build the capacity of students, parents, teachers, staff, and community to engage in RJ practices. The RJ Coordinator will also work with the STOP Youth Organizer to support ongoing youth organizing campaigns including our campaign to remove police from schools and reinvest in restorative justice alternatives. Systems management and administrative duties are required such as use of contacts database. The RJ Coordinator is supervised by, evaluated by, and reports to the Executive Director.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


Develop Cohort of Students Trained in RJ Peace Circle Keeping

  • Coordinate a stipended restorative justice training program for students.
  • Build relationships with students through 1-1 meetings and community building activities.
  • Support the leadership development of students and their engagement in restorative justice culture and practice.
  • Coordinate peace circle keeping trainings, weekly meetings or activities, and community education events.


Develop RJ Capacity at Hyde Park Academy and surrounding schools

  • Work with students from Hyde Park Academy to engage parents, teachers, staff and community from Hyde Park Academy and surrounding schools in RJ peace circle trainings, community building circles and RJ educational events.


Support STOP’s Campaigns

  • Support the youth organizer as well as other STOP organizers in engaging your base of school community members in the ongoing campaigns of STOP.


Develop and Broaden STOP’s Alliances and Connections to Social Service Providers

  • Attend relevant coalition meetings with STOP members
  • Build and maintain relationships with allies, potential allies, and social service providers
  • Recruit STOP members to attend key actions and events put on by organizations working in solidarity with STOP


Manage and coordinate work of volunteers


Fundraising

  • Support students, parents, teachers, staff and community in planning and implementing grassroots fundraisers
  • Support individual donor fundraising
  • Assist in grant writing and/or soliciting input from members into grants


Systems and Administrative

  • Collect and organize sign in sheets and minutes from all meetings.
  • Submit timesheets weekly.
  • Produce a written bi-weekly workplan outlining goals for the month and activities to achieve those goals.
  • Check email daily, Monday – Friday, and respond to emails within 24-48 hours during business hours.
  • Respond to text messages
  • Track turnout and base building activities using database.
  • Complete other documentation as needed in an accurate and timely manner


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to STOP’s issues and values including economic and racial justice, gender equity, and human rights
  • Familiarity with restorative justice and youth/school issues
  • Ability to get along well with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of Woodlawn, Kenwood, Southshore and other South Side communities
  • Familiarity with other community organizations in Chicago
  • Awareness of community resources and ability to network to build community relationships
  • Strong writing and speaking skills, including large group presentations
  • Self motivated, independent problem-solvers and works well as part of a team
  • Commitment to fostering a work environment and organizing campaigns that challenge and undo racist, classist, sexist, homophobic, anti-immigrant and other forms of prejudice and oppression
  • Good personal organization skills, ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize and use time effectively
  • Proficiency with word-processing, Google spreadsheets, e-mail and internet, or commitment to learn (training can be provided). 
  • Willingness to work regularly on evenings and some weekend hours
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bachelor’s degree not required, but equivalent through work experience preferred.


PAY/Benefits: This is a full time (40 hours per week) position, $40-45K depending on experience, plus health insurance, 2 weeks paid vacation and personal days.
