Position Overview

The Senior Vice President, People Experience & Culture leads a team to inspire, coach and support the City Year community to enhance and care for the City Year experience and culture – from someone’s first day of work or service through alumnihood – for AmeriCorps members, staff, managers and leaders, and alumni.

The SVP reports to City Year’s Chief People Officer and is a member of the People Leadership Team.

Job Description

Responsibilities 

In this role, you will lead a team within the People Team to care for and center the experiences of our people through the following functions: People Business Partners, employee engagement, the AmeriCorps experience, performance management and talent development, mental health and well-being, health and safety of the City Year community, and the alumni experience. The team works in collaboration with functions across the organization to support: creating and managing successful, people-focused teams; supporting leaders to manage with identity and inclusion at the forefront; workforce planning and strategy; asset-based performance management and improvement; driving engagement to increase impact; cultivating effective leadership teams; change management; mental health and well-being; our alumni experience; and people-relations challenges. 

 

Team and Functional Management 

  • Managing the team experience, performance, culture and work execution of the People Experience & Culture team geographically disbursed staff members 
  • Integrate team vision, priorities and goals into team ethos 
  • Oversee the building of evergreen resources and continuous enhancements to support our culture and our people’s practices and mindsets around work, service and management 
  • Ensure high quality support and value-add experiences for our stakeholders 
  • Support the overall People Team and People Team vision, priorities and goals through leadership on the People Leadership Team, supporting collaboration and communication 

 

Employee Experience 

  • Elevate the skills, mindsets and practices of our leaders and managers through coaching, trainings/spaces, systems, policies and organizational culture norms and habits 
  • Ensure the effective management of our employee engagement platform, data collection, review, analysis and supports for managers 
  • Manage the experience, tools, trainings and resources for our people through the annual performance management cycle 
  • Oversee the full suite of experiences of staff and AmeriCorps members, including national alumni strategy, engagement and enhancement 

 

Risk Management & Compliance 

  • Co-lead the COVID-19 mitigation and support work nationally and with close alignment with senior leaders, people team and location people points 
  • Provide thoughtful, value-add and just in time coaching, resources, and policy development to support our community during the COVID-19 pandemic 
  • Ensure our health and safety policies are up to date and accessible, while creating new experiences and resources to respond to the real-time service, people and mental health needs of the organization 
  • Oversee the integrity, annual review process and communication of our City Year people policies for AmeriCorps Members and staff 
  • Co-lead the People Policies & Practices organization-wide governance group 
  • Ensure that City Year community members are treated fairly with regard to performance management, performance development and termination practices, and that we have quality and accessible resources and tools for managers  
  • Lead, manage and train People Business Partners to implement key HR policies, including onboarding and exit practices, with consistency and integrity 
  • Liaise with site people points in each location to ensure strong knowledge base, support and consistency across the people experience

 Qualifications 

  • A strong commitment to City Year’s culture, values and mission 
  • Experience managing people, processes and teams to exceptional results 
  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing complex and organization-wide strategies for employee engagement and culture development 
  • Impeccable judgment in managing confidential and sensitive information and situations 
  • Strong knowledge base in people compliance and risk management 
  • Exceptional collaborator and trust-builder 
  • Proven ability to build strategic internal and external relationships by making connections and removing obstacles 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong facilitation experience preferred 

This position can be based remotely in the U.S.; proximity to City Year site location preferred.  Occasional travel for is required when regular travel resumes.
