OVERVIEW

Powerful Voices’ mission is to create brave spaces with girls* of color to take charge of their own power as leaders, igniting their abilities to confidently express themselves, build community, and act against injustices affecting their lives. Since 1995, Powerful Voices provides support for girls* of color in and outside schools and the juvenile justice system. We provide social justice-focused, all-girl* experiences for girls* of color ages 12-18. Young folx qualify if they reside or attend school in central, southeast and southwest Seattle.

*We serve young people who identify as girls*.

THE OPPORTUNITY 

Powerful Voices is searching for an experienced full-time Communications & Community Engagement Manager to lead the internal and external communications for Powerful Voices. This role will be creating detailed social media content, communication plans, and marketing materials for the organization. A successful candidate for this role would have a background working with communities of color; be experienced in nonprofit communications; be committed to advancing Powerful Voices’ values of social, equity and racial justice in key areas of responsibility; has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and is passionate about engaging girls* of color. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Time percentages are estimates, will vary seasonally, and may change based on the needs of the organization.

Marketing and Communications (50%)

  • Assist in developing and executing an org-wide communications strategy that advances the goals of Powerful Voices 
  • Communicate to external audiences and partners utilizing the website, social media, electronic newsletters, and other outreach/marketing materials
  • Oversees all design work to maintain consistent branding for Powerful Voices; ensuring that the tone, look, and feel of any communications reflects our style and represent our values
  • Work in close collaboration with programs team to create content that highlights the work of young people and programmatic events 
  • Create messaging highlighting young people’s agency, decision-making, and ability to co-create solutions
  • Support content creation of all development deliverables including but not limited to annual appeals, annual report and quarterly donor newsletters.  
  • Responsible for overseeing the performance and maintenance of the website, with knowledge in analysis of data (collection, measuring and understanding user activity, marketing analysis)
  • Develop long-term marketing and communications plan and creates strategic opportunities to highlight programs outcomes, donor events, and overall mission 

Community Engagement (40%) 

  • Act as the main point person for coordinating external requests to partner, and works in a collaborative environment to identify staff roles, resources, and other needs to support the event, training, or workshop
  • Collaborate with staff to create strategic plan to build partnerships with individuals, organizations, businesses, schools, etc to leverage the growth of Powerful Voices
  • Identifies opportunities to elevate and advance Powerful Voices mission, looking for the most strategic and mission aligned opportunities to partner or leverage our time and talents with others
  • Coordinates the planning and implementation of external facing events (ranging from Girlvolution, Girl Justice, Revolutionary Community Care Day, etc)
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for programmatic and org-wide events 

Others (10%)

  • Collaborate with other staff in the strategic planning process affecting Powerful Voice’s future; build key strategies for long-term strategic direction set for 2-5 years
  • Correspond with and support the Development Manager to coordinate communication plans related to building donor relationships and annual reports; utilizing Salsa Labs for the donor engagement CRM
  • Participate in staff team building activities, attend community events, and otherwise contribute to strengthening the deep roots within our community, both internally and externally

GENERAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Demonstrated experience may include lived experience, educational experience, work experience, volunteer experience, and/or non-traditional experience. The successful candidate will possess many the following qualifications: 

Desired Experience

  • 3+ years of communications experience with demonstrated skills in building communication plans as well as executing them
  • 2+ years of experience in any or a combination: Black Liberation movement building, community organizing, youth development, issue advocacy, grassroots communications, and/or a closely related field. 
  • Strong verbal communications skills and demonstrated experience in written communication, preferably in nonprofit setting
  • Strong partnership-building skills. 
  • Excellent attention to detail, project management, and time management skills.
  • Having significant experience working with Black-led/Queer- and Trans-led organizations, broad coalitions, and multiracial communities. 
  • Have demonstrated ability to communicate internally and externally through a social justice model of solidarity, familiarity with transformative justice, healing justice, and Black feminist thought, with an understanding of abolition is and why it is essential to Black liberation. 
  • Proficiencies in MS Office, Google Suite, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent photo editing and graphic design platform. 

Preferred Experience

  • General understanding of video production, editing, and storyboarding
  • Graphic design skills 
  • Bachelor’s level degree in communications, business, or equivalent work experience in related fields
  • Local to the Greater Seattle area preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), exempt position at 40 hours/week. Our office is open 9:00am-5:00pm. There is room for flexible scheduling that values individual wellness. 

  • During this period of COVID-19 and social distancing, work is performed in a hybrid model with the majority of the work home, with optional in-office setting, and occasional in-person events. 
  • All staff are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • Powerful Voices employees spend about 80% of their time working on the computer; Powerful Voices will also provide staff with a laptop and other reasonable resources that would support a comfortable remote work environment. 
  • Physical demands may require occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds, long periods of computer work and phone usage, and remaining in an office space, either standing or sitting for prolonged periods
  • WA State driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle preferred, but not necessary. Access to reliable transportation is necessary.

SALARY & BENEFITS 

The salary range for this position is $60,000-$69,000 (this is equivalent to $28.85 - $33.17/hour) Depending on Experience, where experience is assessed as a combination of lived experience, professional experience, educational experience, volunteer experience, and nontraditional experience.

  • Medical & Dental: Powerful Voices provides full medical/dental/vision benefits for employees who work full-time
  • Holidays & Time Off: 16 paid holidays a year and Paid Time Off (PTO) for full-time employees. We have instituted a Floating Holiday system where you can choose 7 of your own holidays to reflect your culture, community, and values
  • Transportation: Employees who use personal vehicles for Powerful Voices’ business will be reimbursed at a standard rate and/or Powerful Voices will reimburse employees for utilizing public transportation
  • Professional Development Trainings: PV has a separate fund for each staff member to attend trainings and workshops that staff find relevant to professional growth
  • Generative Somatics: hour-long monthly meetings and optional one-on-one quarterly meetings with our Generative Somatics coach to process through goals, life, work, and commitments.
  • Wellness Fund: $20 per month to spend on activities or objects that you use to keep yourself well (ex. gym membership, massage, concert ticket, etc.)
  • Self-Care: 4 personal hours of self-care per month that can be counted as work hours
