At Pivot/CORE, we look for talented and inspiring colleagues who believe in public education and the imperative to support schools to innovate and improve. We are currently seeking an entrepreneurial leader to join the Pivot/CORE team as our new Director, Innovation. This is a new position that will oversee a small team and portfolio of diverse projects, both new and existing, with a goal of these projects ultimately launching and scaling up as new products and services for Pivot/CORE. These projects represent a mix of focus areas, all focused on serving high-priority student populations (e.g., multilingual learners) and related policy areas (e.g., improving information availability and accessibility regarding the quality of instructional materials in California).

This is a full-time, Exempt position, reporting to the Chief Growth Officer. Pivot/CORE is currently a virtual organization, with the majority of staff based in California. Candidates for this position can be based anywhere in the US, and this is a remote role based out of your home office. This position will require occasional travel to client sites across the country, and regular travel to Pivot/CORE internal meetings and events; we expect that required travel will resume in early 2022, depending on the COVID-19 pandemic.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·        Oversee project execution for existing and new policy-focused initiatives, ensuring all deliverables and outcomes are highest quality, aligned to Pivot/CORE priorities, and meet user/client/funder needs.

·        Serve as direct project manager for specific projects in the Innovation portfolio, guiding them from launch through achievement of all deliverables. This includes developing and managing project plans, leading regular meetings of project teams, facilitating decision-making across multiple partners, and supervising staff and contractors.

·        Measure usability and market demand for any new products or services generated by projects from the Innovation portfolio, and adapt products and services accordingly.

·        Manage a small team of 1–3 direct reports. Manage self, team, other organizational stakeholders, and external partners to deadlines and deliverables.

·        Develop and maintain productive partnerships with school partners (e.g., individual schools, districts, charters, county offices) and other external partners (e.g., education nonprofits, research/policy/advocacy organizations, technology companies, state entities, funders). Stay abreast of the current policy landscape and trends in K–12 public education.

·        Prepare for, facilitate, and manage follow-up from meetings, events and trainings (virtual, in-person or a hybrid) with all partners. This includes developing or overseeing the development of materials, resources, and tools for various audiences.

·        In partnership with the Pivot/CORE research/evaluation team, facilitate cycles of feedback and data analysis to improve potential products, services, other deliverables.

·        Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

·        A passion for Pivot/CORE’s vision, a commitment to public education as a key lever for opportunity, and a desire to deepen the organization’s impact.

·        A demonstrated understanding of institutional and structural racism and bias, and the impact of other inequities on historically underserved students.

·        Experience in the K–12 education sector, including working in and/or with K–12 education via local education agencies (i.e., county offices, districts, or charters) or education nonprofits. Strong knowledge of current policy issues (federal, state-specific, or both) is essential.

·        Background aligned with at least one of Pivot/CORE’s focus areas, such as English language development, effective instructional practices for multilingual learners, high-quality instructional materials, special education, prevention and intervention, or the science of reading.

·        People management experience, with a demonstrated commitment to building team members’ capacity and skills, and a track record of leading and developing an engaged, diverse, and effective small team.

·        Thrives under ambiguity, takes initiative, and is able to work independently.

·        Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

·        Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work productively with educators and partner organizations.

·        Bachelor’s degree required; 10+ years of relevant work experience.

·        Fluency in Spanish preferred.
