SEIU BOLD CENTER: The BOLD Center works to expand the leadership and effectiveness of individuals, teams and organizations to sustain a lifetime of activism and achieve our vision of a multi-racial democracy for generations to come. The BOLD Center's approach to organizational capacity building includes providing individual support to locals through onsite consultation and retreat-based facilitation. Our approach to personal leadership centers on growing highly proficient and inclusive leaders through individual coaching, transformative leadership development programs and peer-based learning. The BOLD Center brings together equity and inclusion, organization development and change management experts; executive coaches; and social change leaders to grow well rounded union leaders and staff, build highly effective organizations, and implement innovative programs.

PURPOSE: This position works in close collaboration with the BOLD Center director, serves as a thought partner, and is responsible for managing all aspects of the programs of the SEIU BOLD Center. The incumbent should be dedicated to building visionary, strategic, adaptive, and equitable leaders throughout the networks, and a powerful and agile BOLD Center to realize the vision and strategies of SEIU.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.)

Working in conjunction with the BOLD Center Director and the Deputy Director for Leadership and Racial Justice, with a high degree of autonomy, the incumbent of this position will be responsible for:
  • Innovating on a BOLD client-facing system that begins with intake from locals and IU departments, matches faculty with projects/coaching needs and ongoingly assesses and improves upon the process, aligned with BOLD's vision for equity and high-impact client experiences
  • Communicating BOLD Center approaches, offerings and faculty expertise throughout the union and beyond by finalizing work on a website and other materials to share and expand understanding of and connection to the Center's work
  • Overseeing the management of the department budget including program planning and projecting costs, tracking year to date spending and approving monthly invoices and/or billing
  • Providing direction for the management of consultant agreements, memoranda of understanding and/or contracting with internal SEIU clients
  • Perform other duties as required to support the department and its mission

CONTACTS: Frequent and regular contact with SEIU International Officers, SEIU International Executive Board Committees, SEIU BOLD Center consultants, SEIU local leaders and staff, SEIU Divisions/Departments leaders, International Union staff, and vendors.

DIRECTION AND DECISION MAKING: This position reports to the BOLD Center director.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Degree from an accredited four-year college or university or experience equivalent to a degree. Graduate level accreditation in organizational development, nonprofit management or equivalent experience. A minimum of eight (8) years of experience demonstrating progressively greater responsibility preferably in the field of organizational development and leadership in a labor union, political, nonprofit, or issue-driven environment; a minimum of eight (8) years of experience working in the organizational change field in a progressive environment. The incumbent must have and be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Development and implementation of programs that help organizations successfully manage organizational change.
  • Leadership development, organizational change and innovation theories, models and practice
  • A race analysis and anti-racist organizational change and organizational equity and inclusion practices
  • Strong facilitation skills, to include engaging conflict constructively, advancing processes from beginning to outcomes, planning for and managing regular meetings to engage all parties in inclusive ways that get to new results
  • Management of multiple priorities and projects in a timely manner while tracking a variety of projects
  • Internal and external communications, and an understanding of brand development
  • Leadership coaching approaches and practice for our clients and their particular needs
  • Collaboration with all levels of staff and elected officers
  • Development of diverse, high-development and high-performing teams
  • Supervision of manager and assistant level staff
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, including the ability to make presentations plan and develop materials and conferences
  • Skillful navigation in politically sensitive situations, exercising leadership and good judgement
  • Proficient use of technology
  • Knowledge of unions and local union structures, systems and culture highly preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is generally performed in an office setting, but the job may require work in the field or in other settings to perform the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available for frequent travel with overnight stays. Travel and work beyond traditional business hours is required.
