Beyond The Bars is a  student driven music and career skills nonprofit that is dedicated to interrupting the cycles of violence and divestment while helping our students recognize their immense potential and bright futures. The organization works to create accessible musical spaces and programs where youth can express themselves in positive ways while being connected to a supportive community.

The Program Mentor works to support youth in expressing their emotions through music in a positive and healthy manner. They will work with students in writing and recording their own music while discussing the songs that they write. The Facilitator will help implement a curriculum providing political history, writing prompts, community building and supporting recording and performing opportunities. This Facilitator will work to help youth of a variety of backgrounds including youth who have experience with the juvenile justice system in realizing their talent and musical capabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and participate in pre-lesson activities to ensure smooth class flow, delegate teacher roles based on student goals.
  • Lead team efforts in building relationships with students and their partner mentors and upholding classroom agreements.
  • Facilitate entrance and exit rituals for programming and monitor time allocation across class sections.
  • Engage with non-participating students through conversations during class, providing encouragement to those struggling with assignments.
  • Ensure completion of sign-in sheets and check-ins, and coordinate student transportation arrangements.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager for weekly lesson planning, identifying student interests and resource needs.
  • Assist youth in songwriting and facilitate discussions around their creative process, while supporting recording and performing opportunities alongside a production co-teacher.
  • Foster a supportive community environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and building self-esteem, guiding them in creating portfolios of their musical and songwriting work throughout the program duration.

Hours: 

This is a part time position (generally 2-8 hours a week to start) that would work around your schedule when possible. Must have availability on weekdays (Monday-Thursdays) between 4PM-8PM

Pay:

  • $27.20 an hour as a W2 employee
  • Septa Keycard or mileage reimbursement for trips to programs

Qualifications: 

  • 2+ Years of Experience working with youth in a Mentorship Role
  • Skills and Training in Conflict Resolution,  Trauma Informed Practices
  • Comfort with the facilitating the creative process and guiding conversations
  • Ability to get state and federal clearances (we will support in this process)

Skills: 

  • Ability to create a positive space for young people to express themselves
  • Demonstrates an ability to mentor youth and help guide and support the writing process
  • Comfortable in facilitating groups of 6-8 students in having conversations around their music and emotions
  • Able to engage in conflict resolution and restorative justice for youth in programming
  • Familiarity with the juvenile justice system and its impacts on students
  • Comfort for Project Management regarding teacher delegation and student portfolios and deliverables
