Established in 1987, ARTICLE 19 works for a world where all people everywhere can freely express themselves and actively engage in public life without fear of discrimination. Our mission is to promote and defend the universal human rights of freedom of expression and information around the world, through international advocacy, campaigns, legal analysis, and regional and national projects. Our international secretariat is based in London, however we have established regional teams based in the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Africa.

 

ABOUT TEAM COMMUNITY

 

In 2019 ARTICLE 19 took over the hosting of the Internet Freedom Festival giving the IFF an operational home. In part response to the global pandemic the IFF took forward the crucial work it does with the global community of digital rights defenders, in the form of Team CommUNITY (TCU), and expanded its programmatic work, with almost all of its activities hosted online. The consequent expansion of the team and growth of community has led to an increased emphasis on higher level support for the various communities under threat.  

 

ROLE PURPOSE

 

Reporting to the Head of Team CommUNITY the Deputy Head will play an intrinsic part in the future of TCU and will hold a senior leadership position within it. The Deputy Head will manage operations, project delivery and reporting, aspects of partnership development and fundraising, ensure effective financial operations including carrying out due diligence on new partnerships and contracts. The role will also work closely with the Head of Team to chart Team CommUNITY’s future growth and strategic response to a post pandemic environment. As a key member of the organization’s leadership team, the post will be responsible for managing a talented and highly motivated team.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

●     Lead the TCU to implement and deliver its portfolio of managed projects including the creation of a process-based structure with the appropriate tools, documentation and evaluation in place for effective project management and collaboration in collaboration with A19. 

●     Work with the Head of Team to develop fundraising proposals and grant applications, including when required representing the Head of Team at external activities.

●     Manage the effective implementation of our monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework in collaboration with A19.

●     Develop work plans with team staff, supporting them to deliver activities to agreed goals, and evaluate progress. 

●     Provide professional peer support as part of staff development programmes.

●     Manage in close coordination with ARTICLE 19’s finance department, key processes for TCU reporting, compliance, and due diligence, including review of monthly financial statements. 

●     Manage the implementation of all active and awarded contracts with special attention to financial processing and accurate accounting of activities.

●     Manage processes required to deliver quarterly reporting to donors and partners.

●     Identify and support the development of internal communications channels and processes - placing an emphasis on asynchronous participation – in order to improve community practice.  

●     Coordinating with the ARTICLE 19 organisational resilience team, ensure the effective management and implementation of current and future solutions for information technology, and knowledge management for TCU.

●     In coordination with the HR Team lead on human resources planning including recruitments resource planning, and learning and development.

●     Ensure appropriate and substantial inductions take place for all new team members.

●     Ensure the well-being of the team by conducting monthly well-being check-ins; offer mentoring, coaching, and serve as an approachable sounding board and resources for the team.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

What we need (required knowledge and skills)

 

Education and Qualification

●     Educated to degree level or graduate level

●     Considerable experience in a senior management position in a nonprofit organisation, foundation, or government agency, and in a similar role.

●     Clear achievements in scope of the role, from finance to people management.

●     Demonstrable ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people – junior and senior, for-profit and non-profit, and from diverse backgrounds.

●     Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as well as ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings.

●     Transparent, direct, self-starter, self-disciplined with appreciation of creative and flexible approaches.

●     Well-organised and effective, with clear ability to remain focused under pressure, deliver against timelines.

●     Experience in capacity building and facilitating and promoting learning across teams and organisations;

●     Experience in creating or managing processes to engage stakeholder feedback for improved programming;

●     Experience of working with large institutional donors such as USDoS, FCDO, the EC, SIDA, etc.

●     Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

●     Excellent planning, organisational and leadership skills;

●     Ability to effectively balance and coordinate multiple competing priorities, working within set, and sometimes tight, deadlines;

 

What we would like (preferred qualifications)

●     Have experience with or background in holistic security, digital security, or organizational security.

●     Experience working within the digital rights, internet freedom, or human rights field.

●     Be an emotionally intelligent and strong leader.

●     Experience in strategic and creative thinking and be an enthusiastic team player.
