Job Announcement – Donor Relations Officer

Job Summary:

The Donor Relations Officer oversees a comprehensive fundraising strategy to retain and upgrade mid-level donors giving $1,200 - $9,999 annually to United Way of King County. This is a critical gift range driving important revenue to fuel the organization’s mission. The Donor Relations Officer is the primary contact for mid-level Change Maker donors, and the position also helps to build a pipeline of new major gifts donors at the $10,000 Champion level and coordinates fundraising initiatives with cross-departmental teams and with volunteers.

The annual recruiting salary range is $71,500 - $76,500 DOE. This position is open until filled; first consideration will be given to applications received within two weeks of posting.

Essential Duties:

  • Cultivates relationships with a portfolio of 400-600 donors giving $1,200 - $9,999 annually (especially focusing on donors with the ability to give $5,000+) by working with donors to provide updates and stewardship, and to ask them to deepen their financial partnership with United Way of King County.
  • Serves as a leader with UWKC Annual Giving and Brand Development & Marketing colleagues in co-developing the communication strategy, solicitations, and stewardship materials for Change Maker donors giving $1,200 - $9,999 per year. The Donor Relations Officer is the primary point-of-contact with donors in this important donor category.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and solicits new major gift prospects at the $10,000 Champion level from within the assigned portfolio, and collaborates with UWKC Donor Relations Managers (i.e. major gift officers) to seamlessly transition these prospects to the Donor Relations Managers’ portfolios.
  • Helps to identify planned gift prospects.
  • Primarily engages with donors and prospects through phone, email, social media, and mail.
  • Makes occasional face-to-face donor calls for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship purposes.
  • Understands UWKC’s mission, vision, and programs and effectively communicates key information to donors.
  • Initiates discussions proactively with donors about the intersection between race and poverty and United Way of King County’s commitment to working toward racial equity.
  •  Captures significant relationship activities, financial projections, and donor information in Microsoft CRM in conjunction with how the information relates to the portfolio.

  • Demonstrated outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships and actively contribute as a member of working teams to achieve results.
  • Proven effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to obtain, analyze, and evaluate information effectively in the face of ambiguity, and to make appropriate decisions based on relevant information and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, cultivate, and steward strong relationships to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and trust with United Way of King County.
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice.
  • Proven committed team player with effective listening and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning and implementing skills, as well as effective project management skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and donor database knowledge.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience as determined by Human Resources, in fundraising, business, or a related field. At least five years of progressively responsible experience in development. Significant experience with fundraising techniques to substantially upgrade individual donors is highly desired. Working knowledge of planned giving a plus.

COVID-19 Update:

Protecting the health and safety of our communities is a top priority. Due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic, all interviews will be conducted remotely for the time being. We will provide candidates who are selected for interviews with all the required instructions for the interview process. 

United Way of King County values workplace flexibility. Our office is currently closed, and staff are working remotely until February 22, 2022. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation as well as the overall health of our community and we may adjust the office opening date as needed. When our office does reopen, we will offer a hybrid approach combining in-office work and remote work for our staff.
