Job Title: Chief Executive Officer

Salary Range: $210,000-$250,000

Brighton Marine seeks a seasoned nonprofit Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization in its mission to ensure healthcare access for uniformed service members. The CEO provides day-to-day leadership and management of people, budgets, programs, and facilities, ensuring that all organizational activities promote Brighton Marine’s mission and comply with relevant laws, policies, and best practices.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to manage a nonprofit organization and will possess the following competencies:

  • Exceptional leadership skills. The CEO will be a strong, experienced leader who is action oriented, adaptable, innovative, and self-directed. Personal assets include integrity, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively.
  • Expertise in nonprofit governance and operations. In addition to extensive experience as a C-suite executive of a nonprofit organization, the CEO must have working knowledge of proper nonprofit governance practices to support the activities of the board of directors.
  • Strategic thinker and change manager. The next CEO will engage staff and board in a collaborative process of analysis and growth. S/he will have the ability to design and implement the systems, processes, and accountabilities necessary to support solutions to fulfill the mission of ensuring healthcare access for veterans.
  • Strong community engagement and collaboration skills. The CEO must be a good listener, strategist, and collaborator. S/he will successfully engage with existing and potential partners to build strong connections that are mutually beneficial to Brighton Marine and its mission.
  • Superior contract negotiation and management skills. The CEO will negotiate and manage government and private contracts of all sizes, representing the interests of Brighton Marine and its clients and ensuring that contract terms are fulfilled.
  • Proven experience in personnel management. The CEO will be an experienced and effective manager of people. S/he will lead a motivated, effective team working together to drive results across the organization and reach a common vision. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Leadership and Organizational Management

  • Lead, manage, and supervise the day-to-day operations of a multifaceted and complex organization.
  • Manage the effective performance of the primary campus, including buildings rented to businesses as well as residences.
  • Ensure effective support to veterans residing in transitional housing on campus.
  • Implement the board-approved strategic plan and ensure all organizational activities align with the mission of Brighton Marine.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and other governing documents adopted by the board, all relevant state, municipal, and federal laws, and any funder restrictions.
  • Ensure compliance and the successful implementation of administrative functions, including but not limited to human resources, finance and budgeting, contract negotiation and management, grants, fundraising, and communications.
  • Ensure compliance and the successful implementation of governance functions, including but not limited to nonprofit compliance, strategic planning, board relations, and board development.
  • Ensure compliance and the successful implementation of programs, including program development, implementation, and evaluation.

2. Human Resources

  • Ensure overall staffing structure and individual job duties meet the needs of the organization.
  • Manage all personnel, including direct leadership and supervision of the management team.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant state and federal employment laws and nonprofit best practices.
  • Oversee recruitment, retention, hiring, onboarding, and off-boarding processes.
  • Ensure Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for all employees and manage employee handbook.
  • Design and implement an annual employee evaluation process, salary/benefits, and viewpoints survey.
  • Design and implement staff training, professional development, and team building activities.

3. Financial Management and Fundraising

  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to prepare and implement the annual budget.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, best practices, funder restrictions, and organizational policies.
  • Negotiate and execute all leases, agreements, contracts, and purchases as permitted by organizational policies.
  • Ensure that the terms and responsibilities of all contracts and subcontracts are met.
  • Ensure compliance and effective performance for a contract with Department of Defense to provide healthcare services to approximately 15,000 uniformed services retirees, veterans, and families.
  • Work with the Finance Team to advise the board on financial matters, budget, and future needs.
  • Oversee all fundraising initiatives, particularly special events, donor relations, and grants.

4. Board Relations

  • Develop long-term strategies, short-term plans, policies, and annual budgets with the Board of Directors.
  • Participate in monthly board meetings, including preparing the meeting agenda, attending meetings, and reporting to the board.
  • Assist with the identification, recruitment, and orientation of new board members.
  • Steward board members and develop board members’ capacity for fundraising.
  • Stay apprised of board and committee activities; serve as the primary management point of contact. Support committee chairs by ensuring management representation at meetings.
  • Inform the Board of Directors in a timely manner of any significant risk or organizational issue that merits concern or noteworthy achievements.

5. Communications, Marketing, and Public Relations

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for Brighton Marine; ensure positive representation of the organization; and advocate on behalf of the organization, its mission, and its clients.
  • Cultivate relationships with community partners; seek and evaluate opportunities to partner on collaborative projects.
  • Build relationships with individuals, business associations, corporations, foundations, and media that have synergies and alignment with Brighton Marine mission and priorities.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a communications plan and all public-facing content related to the organization.
  • Attends seminars, lectures, and conferences to identify current trends in the field and enhance knowledge base of the organization.
  • Serves on boards, committees, and working groups that advance the brand and market the Brighton Marine mission.

6. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business, public administration, social work, social service, non-profit management, or similar, plus experience in senior level leadership at a nonprofit organization of comparable size or complexity, preferably at the same level/position of Executive Director or CEO.
  • Knowledge of veterans’ services, tenant management, and/or health plan management a plus.
  • Vision, energy, and passion for serving veterans, as well as an unwavering commitment to Brighton Marine’s mission.
  • Strong business acumen with a proven track record of effective management, board relations, contract negotiation and management, fundraising, and budgeting.
  • Ability to analyze performance, strategize improvements, build consensus, and implement solutions.
  • Comfort with and ability to lead change.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen, communicate clearly and persuasively, build relationships, encourage collaboration, and professionally resolve conflict.
  • Integrity, tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
  • Ability to work professionally and respectfully with people of diverse ethnicities, religions, beliefs, socio-economic backgrounds, and orientations.
  • Self-motivated team player, able to work both independently and cooperatively.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once while maintaining the highest quality standards.
  • Understands grantmaking and award cycle (award, evaluation, and close) management.
