Rule of Law Index - Program Assistant or Program Associate

The World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index team is seeking to fill one full-time position at either the Program Assistant or Program Associate level at the WJP's office in Washington, DC. The position level will be determined based on the candidate and their qualifications. This is a current vacancy, with an immediate start.

The World Justice Project plans to transition to a hybrid work schedule of three days in the office and two remote days per week. This is subject to change based on COVID-19 transmission rates. Candidates must be within commuting distance of the DC office, or be willing to relocate to Washington DC upon an offer of employment.

Responsibilities

The Program Assistant or Program Associate will report directly to the General Population Poll Program Associate to provide crucial support for the Rule of Law Index team. The Program Assistant or Program Associate will assist with research, data analysis, and other long-term projects on the status of the rule of law in different countries as well as on the mechanisms by which the rule of law operates and affects economic and political life. This position will focus primarily on the household survey side of data collection (General Population Poll) for the WJP Rule of Law Index. The main responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in the primary data collection process for the General Population Poll in 139 countries and jurisdictions, including the Request for Proposals, coordination with local polling partners, and ensuring data quality.
  • Contribute to the data analysis, research, writing, design, and printing of the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index and WJP Rule of Law Index Insights annual reports.
  • Help manage administrative processes for the Index team, including contract negotiations, payment processes, and day to day administration of consultants' contracts.
  • Contribute to projects and activities that relate to alternative data collection efforts, data presentation, and data visualization.
  • Participate in joint endeavors and working groups to contribute to the maintenance and growth of the WJP's considerable network of partners around the globe.
  • Assist with writing and reviewing grant reports as necessary.
  • Undertake rule of law research and analysis as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Program Assistant level position: Open to graduates (Bachelor's Degree) with at least one year of relevant experience.
  • Program Associate level position: Open to graduates (B.A. or M.A.) with at least two years of relevant experience.

All applicants should have excellent attention to detail and strong writing and research skills. International experience and foreign language skills are preferred. The ideal candidate will have completed coursework in international affairs, social sciences, journalism, economics, policy studies, regional studies, or pre-law.

Successful applicants will be bright, highly motivated individuals with a strong academic track record and an enthusiastic interest in the rule of law.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following skills and qualifications:

  • Experience liaising with external partners, vendors, and/or consultants
  • Strong professional writing, research, and communication skills
  • Experience with or knowledge of survey methodology and design
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, multicultural environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • The ability to work independently as well as in group settings, the ability to manage their own workload, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work under deadline pressure.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Commitment to the WJP's mission and principles (worldjusticeproject.org)
  • English fluency is required; fluency in an additional language (including Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Russian) is a plus.
  • The ability to manage large databases (strong skills in Microsoft Excel required; experience with and knowledge of STATA, SPSS, R, or other statistical analysis software is a plus).
  • Experience working with quantitative survey data is a plus. This includes data cleaning, validation, analysis, and visualization.

Physical Requirements

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is frequently required to use finger dexterity as well as sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen. Also, the employee may need to remain seated for long periods of time, have the ability to perform repetitive motions, grasp objects, including a writing instrument, stand, communicate verbally, and hear well enough to detect nuances and receive detailed information. The employee may be required to walk, push, or pull objects, bend, squat, reach, or kneel. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision for extensive reading and data analysis. Working Conditions

The work conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing this job. The incumbent typically works indoors in a heated and air-conditioned office, with a mixture of natural, incandescent, and fluorescent light with low to moderate noise levels.
