Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization, based in New York City, providing high-quality representation of individuals who have been convicted of crimes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island and cannot afford private lawyers. Position Description: We are seeking to hire an investigator/paralegal immediately to support our attorneys and clients by working closely with attorneys and/or social workers to investigate clients’ cases for all collateral proceedings and review as well as performing some administrative and clerical tasks necessary to our work. Among other responsibilities, the investigator/paralegal would perform all investigative work, including identifying, locating, and interviewing witnesses; accompanying lawyers and/or social workers to interview incarcerated clients and witnesses; documenting investigations; preparing and serving subpoenas; visiting, diagramming, and photographing crime scenes and other relevant locations; obtaining documents and reports from relevant sources; preparing exhibits for litigation; and testifying at hearings. When necessary, the investigator/paralegal may be asked to enter and/or retrieve client information maintained in a computer database; obtain records and other documents from courts, prison facilities, and state/city agencies; assist attorneys in preparing court filings by proofreading documents and formatting/assembling PDFs; and corresponding with clients and/or scheduling legal calls or visits.  


Qualifications:

  Demonstrated experience in criminal investigations, including actual innocence and wrongful conviction investigations.

  An interest in criminal defense and social justice

  Strong organizational skills and rigorous attention to detail

  Well-developed interpersonal communication skills

  Bi-lingual capabilities valued

  A self-directed ability to manage multiple tasks

  Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access; Wordperfect; Adobe Acrobat
