ABOUT THE GUILD
The Rochester Folk Art Guild (also known as “the Guild”) is a non-profit, intentional community located on 350-acres in the lush Finger Lakes region of New York State. The Guild serves to support and nourish all who are searching for a more conscious, creative, and responsible way of living. In 1967, under the guidance of its founding director, Louise March, a group of people began developing East Hill Farm, as a center for the Guild, where spiritual search, based on the teachings of George Gurdjieff, could be grounded in practical work. This included farming and stewardship of the land, learning and seeking mastery of traditional crafts, and integrating personal growth with the challenges and rewards of interrelationship and community life. Conceived of as a laboratory where like-minded individuals could support each other in the pursuit of self-knowledge while living in harmony with nature and creating everyday objects of timeless beauty, the Guild evolved into a living community of residents and non-resident members. Today, the Guild caringly cultivates relationships with its rural neighbors and urban patrons of the arts by welcoming visitors to East Hill Farm’s gallery space, lectures, poetry workshops, open houses, musical performances, as well as longer term education in traditional crafts and organic gardening through residencies, classes, and apprenticeships. Recent highlights of Guild programming include a flute weekend and an annual Craft Weekend that provides opportunities for the public to learn a craft over an intensive four-day period. Guild artisans are known internationally for their beautiful crafts including pottery, woodworking, weaving, natural fiber clothing, and folk toys. The Guild continues the tradition of its founders, serving as a center for weekly gatherings of resident and non-resident members in the exploration and practice of Gurdjieff’s teachings.
Today, however, because a much smaller and aging community resides full-time at the Guild, it has now reached a critical new phase in its development, calling for intensified outreach and sharing of its bountiful resources.
In 2018, members of the Rochester Folk Art Guild began to explore transformative visions for the organization. Gradually, a new model for the future has come into view. Building on the foundation of our land-based intentional community, with roots in the Gurdjieff tradition and artistic disciplines, partnerships with area institutions are now being identified and representatives of these institutions invited to tour the Guild’s beautiful grounds. Through this process, we are gradually refining the concept of sharing our resources with like-minded partners who may use the East Hill Farm land and infrastructure to host programming that encourages both personal and societal transformation. Our new partners include: Food for the Spirit, Rochester Institute of Technology, SUNY Geneseo, and more.
Integral to this new vision is the hiring of a Program Director to expand the Guild’s goals and purpose as a means to help support and sustain its original vision. Concurrently, plans are underway for a capital campaign to raise funds for these endeavors, which will require upgrades to the Guild’s physical infrastructure to assure that its buildings and grounds will be safe, functional, and accessible for years to come.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Rochester Folk Art Guild is seeking a passionate Program Director who is dedicated to supporting our organization at an exciting point of transformation. The purpose of the Program Director position is to develop, establish, and maintain systems and structures to support the Guild. This includes, but is not limited to, identifying and writing grants, working with our new partners, and creating a fund development plan around programming to support the new vision for the Guild. The Program Director reports to the board president.
Part-time employment. The Program Director will work on-site at the Guild when necessary for programming and meetings and also from home using phone and laptop provided by the Guild. Office supplies will be provided for remote work.
With the future success of the Guild’s programming and new direction, we envision this role expanding to a full-time position.
