The Youth Advocacy Coordinator is a part of the domestic violence training and prevention team of YWCA Evanston/North Shore. This position supports youth in developing healthy and equitable relationships and partners with youth to help them develop the leadership skills needed to advocate for equitable youth-serving institutions and positively impact peer culture. The position provides violence prevention and sexual health education, with an emphasis on building healthy relationships; targeted youth support groups in K-12 schools and community-based settings; coordinates youth leadership and advocacy programs; maintains effective relationships with community partners, contribute meaningfully to curriculum design and development, and demonstrates a commitment to the delivery of high quality, best-practice services.
The position is responsible for implementing program strategies, coordinating daily activities, and contributing recommendations to agency policies and department priorities and procedures. The coordinator is a motivated self-starter who embraces the opportunity to facilitate prevention programs to educate youth and adults about the dynamics of healthy and unhealthy relationships and how to prevent domestic violence before it begins.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implements school-year sexual health education with an emphasis on delivering the Building Healthy Relationships curriculum in elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as at community-based organizations.
- Trains participants in summer Youth Advocacy Leadership Institute to prepare them to be advocates for safe and equitable relationships
- Trains participants in the after-school Peer Educators Program to develop the knowledge and skills to co-train local youth with YWCA trainers.
- Train youth to effectively participate in the YWCA Youth Advisory Council whose intent is to inform youth-centered programming
- Participates as a trainer on youth-related topics in the YWCA domestic violence trainings including but not limited to the state-required 40-hour domestic violence training program and other community-based trainings on domestic violence or healthy youth relationships.
- Maintains current knowledge of best practices and trends in training skills and relevant content and regularly reviews existing training curricula to implement innovative improvements.
Program Coordination (25%)
- Coordinates the Youth Advocacy Leadership Institute, a summer program with an after-school continuation that prepares youth to be advocates for safe and equitable relationships, including but not limited to planning, scheduling, recruiting youth, developing and delivering curriculum, and facilitating daily activities.
- Coordinates an after-school Peer Educators’ Program that prepares middle school and high school youth to co-train peers with YWCA adult trainers including but not limited to planning, scheduling, recruiting youth, developing and delivering curriculum, and facilitating daily activities.
- Takes the lead on coordinating and co-facilitating a Youth Advisory Board that engages youth in helping to develop and deepen youth-focused services.
- Completes and submits in a timely fashion all necessary documentation. Prepares reports as needed to comply with funding requirements.
Outreach & Education (10%)
- Proactively establishes and maintains positive, professional working relationships with existing community partners and educating and supporting them in a manner that reflects the agency’s values and core principles.
- Represents and speaks about the services of the organization to schools and community organizations.
- Participates in a variety of coalitions and committees to promote collaborative responses encouraging violence prevention education and awareness.
- Assists in developing outreach plans and the creation and updating of outreach and awareness materials.
Curriculum Development (10%)
- Collaboratively reviews existing curricula for improvements in content and delivery and assists in the documentation of curricula.
- Researches and adapts curricula on topics including but not limited to healthy identity formation, youth facilitation, youth community engagement, youth advocacy, and other areas as needs arise.
- Assists in develops training assessment tools and strategies in conjunction with new curricula.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES (5%)
- Provides and attends staff trainings and participates in agency committees.
- Pursues professional development.
- Understands and adheres to all YWCA Evanston/North Shore procedures and policies as well as YWCA Employee Handbook.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Salary Range: $38,000 - $42,000
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience and/or Training:
- Experience providing educational workshops to youth
- Experience with professional writing and curriculum development
- Experience coordinating program logistics including scheduling and recruitment
- Illinois 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training completed within three months of hire
- Illinois 40-Hour Sexual Assault Training completed within three months of hire
- Valid Driver’s License and Proof of Valid insurance
- Proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly PowerPoint
- Reliable access to a personal vehicle to conduct agency business
Education: Bachelor's in Education, Communications, Social Work, or a related field
Experience and/or Training:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with students in a (K-12) setting
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with curriculum development
- Experience with sex education, violence prevention, or equity trainings for youth
- Illinois 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training completed upon hire
- Illinois 40-Hour Sexual Assault Training completed upon hire
