The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Campaign Director will lead a comprehensive multi-year campaign supporting Winnakee Land Trust's stewardship and land protection growth and long-term sustainability.

In the last five years, Winnakee has over doubled our conservation growth and is continuing to expand our land protection and stewardship capabilities. These achievements, combined with a recent strategic planning process and rebranding, have shaped the near-term future and priorities of the organization.  The newly created Campaign Director role will be dedicated to overseeing all aspects of the second half of a multi-year comprehensive campaign and directing additional micro-campaigns and major gifts thereafter.

The position will identify opportunities for major gifts within our existing annual and planned giving donors (in collaboration with the Director of Development) and build new philanthropic pathways through cultivation and donor relations for new campaign gifts.

Winnakee is seeking an exceptional team player who is skillful in building and managing relationships with a wide range of individuals including donors, prospects, vendors, partners and colleagues. The new team member will be charismatic, creative, outgoing, collaborative, organized, goal-oriented, and flexible. Interest in land conservation and environmental issues is important.  The successful candidate will be skilled at conveying a full understanding of Winnakee’s mission, strategic initiatives, projects, programs, and long-term goals with a history of growing diverse revenue sources and enhancing the philanthropic impact of non-profit organizations.

The position is hybrid, and the incumbent will have the ability to work remotely with at least three days a week in our Rhinebeck office.  Limited travel for donor meetings as the situation merits.

• Manage all aspects of the second half of Winnakee’s comprehensive campaign (currently in silent phase with approximately half pledged/raised). Develop, strategize, and implement a written cultivation and solicitation plan for the campaign based on revenue targets.

• Identify and solicit major campaign gifts and serve as lead liaison and primary relationship manager for leveraging additional solicitors such as board and staff.

• Manage the Campaign Steering Committee:

  • Works with and leverages the Development Chair, Executive Director, Board, and Campaign Steering Committee to identify campaign prospects and schedule meetings with prospective donors.
  • Prepare meeting arrangements, including making reservations, scheduling tours of the grounds, sending confirmation emails the day before, and preparing and sending any necessary materials to the donor before the scheduled date.

• Conducts prospect identification and research:

  • The Director leads all identification, research, tracking, and maintenance of an active portfolio of 25-50 campaign prospects.
  • Gathers information about both new donor prospects and current donors (in collaboration with the Director of Development, Annual Fund & Planned Giving).
  • Manage donor prospect cultivation plans and action items.

• Establishes and fosters strong relationships with donors and potential donors:

  • Engages donors in innovative ways and conveys their integral role in supporting Winnakee's mission.

• Ensures follow-ups from major donor meetings occur:

  • Responsible for ensuring donors are thanked appropriately and receive any requested materials and follow-up on promised action steps from meetings.
  • Ensures that meeting records are taken and filed appropriately and action items are noted so they can be reviewed and completed at a future date.
  • Manages follow-up action items and follows up with potential donors to keep the momentum and interest engaged.

• Tracks Campaign pledges and gifts:

  • Maintains an accurate report of campaign progress to date.
  • Coordinates pledge letters and tracking in the database (DonorPerfect).
  • Prepares campaign update reports for Committee and Board meetings.

• Coordinates with the Executive Director and Communications staff to develop and execute communication plans for campaign donors:

  • Schedules Campaign messaging on the communications calendar.
  • Coordinates with other development and communications staff to ensure that all messaging to donors is evenly distributed throughout the year.
  • Aims to avoid overlap with other marketing and solicitation efforts.

• Manages all Campaign materials for donor outreach:

  • In collaboration with the communications department, customizes campaign materials, keeps them up to date, and prepares packages of materials/presentations for campaign meetings.

• Oversee campaign events logistics, ensuring they are instrumental in cultivating potential donors and expressing appreciation for our existing donors.

• Brainstorm and coordinate plan for donor recognition elements:

  • This includes research for similar installations, deciding on tiers to include, and researching potential designers that fit the Winnakee aesthetic.

• Team player, willing to pitch in where needed and build new initiatives from the ground up.

• Entrepreneurial and creative approach to fundraising.

• Enjoys interacting with donors, building authentic relationships with supporters, and making solicitations.

• Eager to dig into data and use metrics to track progress.

• A passion for conservation and/or environmental work; some knowledge of land conservation or related areas is helpful.

• Bachelor’s degree.

• 5-7 years working in a small to medium-sized organization, preferably in development or communications, with active programs around major gift fundraising.

• Donor event planning experience.

• Persuasive communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to form clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals, appeals, and stewardship materials.

• Record of securing major gifts of $10,000 and above.

• Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for major donors.

• Experience with endowment and campaign fundraising a plus.

• Strategic, creative, curious, and organized thinker, skilled at managing multiple competing priorities.

• Ability to work proactively and independently, prioritize, and organize multiple projects.

• Collaborative, positive team player with a high degree of personal initiative and accountability.

• Strong computer skills – MS Office and donor databases (knowledge of DonorPerfect preferred).

  • Regularly work at a desk.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, and moves objects weighing up to 30 lbs. to set up events.
  • Some weekend and evening responsibilities.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Sometimes required to hike and/or walk on uneven ground while visiting Winnakee’s properties with donors or for events.

The position description is intended to provide an overview of the responsibilities and is not an exhaustive list. There may be additional duties assigned that align with the level of this position.
