Northern Virginia Family Service (“NVFS” or “the Agency”) seeks a strategic, relational, and compassionate thought leader to be its inaugural Vice President of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (VP). With almost 100 years of dedicated service ensuring that low-income children and families in Northern Virginia reach their fullest potential, NVFS, which has an annual operating budget of approximately $40 million and a staff of approximately 350, recognizes that our country is at an inflection point. It is incumbent on the Agency to advance racial equity and effect systemic change both in the services it provides and in its internal operations. The inaugural VP will have the unique opportunity to join an organization that is deeply committed to this work at a time when it seeks strategic direction on how to advance the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in ways that are meaningful both to the organization and to the communities it serves.
NVFS is recognized locally and nationally as a leader and innovator of social impact. The individuals and families NVFS serves are among the region’s most vulnerable, facing hunger, homelessness, education disparities, insufficient access to health care, and a wide array of inequities. Each year, the Agency empowers more than 35,000 individuals to improve their lives and achieve self-sufficiency by providing the essential building blocks for financial, emotional, and physical well-being through a broad and deep set of services. Recognizing this, the Agency’s commitment to EDI requires an intentional and deliberate strategic focus and a leader who is passionate about driving meaningful and sustainable change.
Reporting to the President and CEO, serving on the senior leadership team, and working alongside the members of the NVFS community, the VP will guide, develop, and implement an integrated EDI strategy and roadmap in support of NVFS’s strategic priority to advance EDI and be an anti-racist organization. This work will be multi-faceted in nature and will involve aligning the NVFS community—including the senior leadership, staff, and board—around a shared vision and common understanding of EDI and anti-racism; meaningfully engaging in and supporting the EDI work that is already underway; being a present, visible, and engaged leader across the organization’s multiple locations; communicating effectively across organizational and cultural boundaries; and working in close partnership with staff and other leaders to reach communities that have historically been underserved and unengaged by the Agency. This forward-looking leader will build shared accountability for this work, empowering others to implement meaningful and impactful change while fostering a culture of trust, transparency, and openness.
