After-School Program Instructor (Part-Time)

Our Organization

Many Languages One Voice (MLOV) was founded in 2010. Our mission is to build power with immigrant communities in Washington, DC. We do this by fostering the leadership and greater civic participation of immigrants and refugees who do not speak English as their primary language. We believe an actively engaged community that challenges existing inequities is key to achieving systemic change. Thus, we support our members’ leadership and amplify the voices of our most vulnerable members to find solutions to the systemic inequities that impact their lives.

MLOV is a leading player in the immigrant rights and justice movement in DC and regularly builds partnerships and coalitions with wide-ranging stakeholders. In addition to nonprofits and community organizations, MLOV works with government officials, agencies, businesses, and worker groups to advance power-building of immigrant communities in DC.

Position Overview

As the After-School Youth Program Instructor, your primary responsibility will be co-facilitating MLOV’s After-School Youth Program for middle school and high school students, in partnership with a full-time Youth Programs Instructor, other Youth Programs staff, interns, and/or volunteers.

This is a part-time, hourly, temporary position from October 1, 2024, to June 15, 2025, with the possibility of an extension to a temporary, full-time role for the summer of 2025 (late June to mid-August 2025). The expected hourly rate for this role is $22.00 - $26.00 per hour.

Given the schedule of the After-School Program, candidates must be available at least 2 days per week between 3:30pm to 7:30pm, and occasionally on Saturday mornings/early afternoons, with schedule flexibility possible for the right candidate. This role reports to the Youth Programs Manager.

Overview of Responsibilities

Please note this overview may not fully encompass all possible duties, as the work may evolve overtime in response to community needs and organizational priorities.

As the After-School Program Instructor, you will:

• Be responsible for co-implementing in-person activities on weekday evenings for MLOV’s After-School Program, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, in partnership with other program staff;
• Use MLOV’s youth program curriculum and/or resources obtained through independent research to implement meaningful and interactive activities for youth program participants;
• Establish rapport with youth, most of whom identify as immigrants or children of immigrants;
• Assist with program set-up and tear-down before and after session;
• Analyze feedback and data from youth participants to improve their program experience;
• Plan, organize, and/or chaperone field trips to locations in and around D.C.;
• Collaborate in the development of lesson plans, as needed;
• Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all youth during lessons;
• Adhere to all program and MLOV organizational policies.

Candidate Qualifications

Required Qualifications

You have:

• At least a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED, HSED, HiSET, or TASC)

You are/have:

• Bilingual (English-Spanish)
• Willing to obtain or already possess the following background checks:
  • Current check from DC Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) Child Protection Registry (CPR)
  • Current check from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check
  • Current check from Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Criminal Background Check
  • Current check from the National Sex Offender Registry (NSO)
  • Drug/alcohol screening
• COVID-19 Vaccination

Preferred Characteristics

Ideally, you have:

• At least some college or university studies, especially with a focus on education, political science, psychology, sociology, anthropology, social work, or related fields;
• Outgoing personality and ability to build rapport with youth;
• Experience working directly with immigrant youth;
• Experience training groups of youth from under-resourced communities;
• Experience with Canva, Google Suite, and Microsoft Suite;
• Experience preparing presentations, writing emails, drafting documents, having conversations, and/or making phone calls in a language other than English;
• An understanding of and experience with community organizing;

Ideally, you also are:

• A self-starter, team player, and excellent communicator;
• Motivated and organized;
• Flexible and adaptable;
• Conversational or fluent in a language other than English;

Logistics

• Job Type: Part-time, temporary, hourly
• Availability: At least two weeknights between Monday to Thursday, 3:30pm to 7:30pm
• Hours: 10 to 20 hours per week, depending on candidate availability
• Location: Columbia Heights, Washington, DC

MLOV's Youth Programming

MLOV’s Youth Programming focuses on providing immigrant youth with pathways to academic and career success, civic and social engagement, and leadership opportunities through after-school, summer, and mentorship programming. By participating in our programs, immigrant and English Learner youth experience a safe and empowering space where their identities and backgrounds are celebrated, and where they have the chance to be a kid. They develop leadership skills, build confidence around their identity, and learn how to advocate for issues in their communities.

Our Students

Nearly all of our current students come from Spanish-speaking households and are immigrants or children of immigrants. Most attend D.C. public or public charter schools. The majority of them are also low-income and at risk of experiencing housing and/or food insecurity. They primarily live in Wards 1, 4, and 5.

Our After-School Program

In the After-School Program, middle school and high school immigrant youth from across the District meet twice a week to delve deeper into our core themes of leadership, identity, and advocacy. Sample lesson topics include future career and education plans, cultural differences, conflict resolution, school success, healthy boundaries, and issues in our communities. Lessons are interactive and student-focused with group discussions, team-building activities, and hands-on projects. In addition to the structured activities, staff and students have the opportunity to bond during free time, homework support, and occasional field trips.
