Title: Regional Advocacy Organizer - Midwest

Reporting to: National Field Manager

Travel: Up to 30%, within the Midwest region & 2 all-team work sessions at various national locations Please note: Qualified applicants must reside in either Michigan, Ohio, Illinois or Indiana to meet our need for on-the-ground organizing tasks in our top-priority states

About Swipe Out Hunger: Founded in 2010, Swipe Out Hunger works to end student hunger alongside the more than 750+ college and university campuses we partner with across North America. Swipe Out Hunger promotes on-campus solutions, policy and advocacy, and community-building practices to address college food insecurity. 

Role Description: Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of college students facing food insecurity? Join Swipe Out Hunger as a Regional Advocacy Organizer and become a catalyst for change in the Midwest region! This exciting remote opportunity allows you to work from the comfort of your home in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, or Indiana while actively engaging with our coalition, elected officials, and student advocates.

As a Regional Advocacy Organizer, you will play a vital role in amplifying the impact of our grassroots movement to pass the transformative Hunger-Free Campus Act and other related legislation. Your on-the-ground organizing efforts will be instrumental in mobilizing support and driving positive change in our top-priority states.

Responsibilities and Tasks: 

Advocacy and Organizing

  • Research student leaders and groups, and help locate student leaders and groups on campus in the region that will help Swipe Out Hunger build the movement to pass student hunger legislation. 
  • Outreach to student leaders, student groups, and administrative leads in your region and on your campus
  • Plan, organize, and implement grassroots events or actions that contribute to the advocacy/Hunger Free Campus Campaign
  • Run and lead campaign events such as panels, rallies, town halls, tables, and more within your region
  • Connect with legislators and organize coalitions to highlight the issue and generate support at the state level
  • Support the National Field manager on broader campaign strategy, planning, and organizing

Communications and Media Support

  • Create, look over, edit, and proofread campaign materials to be utilized by students, partners, and/or legislators. 
  • Collaborate and support our communications team to create and gather visuals and materials for advocacy work

Programmatic support

  • Communicate with the programs team to establish pantry and admin relationships on campus

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience of 1+ years in advocacy/organizing within non-profit organization, higher education, and/or government sectors
  • Located in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, or Indiana
  • Experience organizing/leading student groups such as advocacy organizations, campus clubs, or food pantry volunteers
  • Comfortable speaking to external audiences and media representatives
  • Able to balance multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and ask for support when needed
  • Collaborative team player with strong work ethic, attention to detail, time management, problem-solving skills and willingness to learn
  • Organized, adaptable self-starter who exhibits "follow through" on tasks and goals
  • Positive attitude, concern for people and community, self-confidence, common sense and good listening skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some policy experience at the state level
  • Familiarity with creating simple graphics using templates in platforms like Canva
  • Lived experience with food insecurity, especially as a college student
  • Knowledge of the higher education landscape and key stakeholders in the Midwest region
  • Existing relationships with student organizations, administrators and elected officials
  • Experience with digital organizing tools and constituent relationship management systems
  • Compelling writing and public speaking skills

Compensation & Benefits: 

This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary of $65,000. Swipe Out Hunger provides a supportive benefits package, including 100% coverage for employees. This includes medical, dental, and vision benefits, 401K retirement matching after 6 months tenure, flex time, a $500/year professional development stipend, and during your first year in your role, $400 towards a ‘Work Comfortably from Home’ fund.
