Job title (depending on experience): Program Coordinator or Program Manager

Reports To: Director of Programs

Status: Full-time, salaried with benefits or part-time

Location: This role will require being out in the field often to implement programs and develop relationships with organizations. SVBC’s office is in San Jose, CA - one day a week all staff are required to be in the office. Additionally, this role will be responsible for implementing virtual trainings/workshops.


Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a non-profit membership-based organization that seeks to a more healthy and just community by making bicycling safe and accessible to all.


We’re extraordinarily proud of the impact we’ve had over the past ten years in improving local infrastructure and normalizing bicycling for transportation. The Team

You’ll join a team of 15 people that are passionate about moving swiftly toward our goals in a manner consistent with our principles. We invest a great deal of time in strengthening relationships and building a high-trust environment where feedback in all directions is welcomed as an opportunity to learn.


The Opportunity

SVBC is hiring two Community Programs Coordinators. The ideal candidate should be a versatile, flexible and adaptable team member who can develop and implement programs that are intended to create lasting behavioral change that results in more people riding bikes for everyday use. We’re looking to fill several program roles that include:


●      Education in Spanish - A Spanish-speaking-bicycle-enthusiast to support our bike education programming. This person would play a prominent role in the coordination and implementation of our youth-education and adult-education (primarily focused in Santa Clara County) in Spanish.

●      Social rides – bring people together with a fun activity to get more people biking. The goal is regular bike rides with trained ride leaders and collaborating with local organizations to help spread awareness and improve bike confidence.

●      Farmbox delivery: grow the Eastside Connect program which coordinates SVBC volunteers to delivery healthy food to families in East San Jose.

●      Electric bikes: coordinate online classes about buying and riding ebikes

●      Youth education – provide programs in-classroom and through “bike rodeos” that teach kids how to ride safely.

●      Adult education – deliver monthly workshops of varying topics to help bring new people to biking and train them up to feel more comfortable biking for everyday use.

●      Valet bike parking – coordinate volunteers and part-time staff to check in and watch people’s bike at big events while talking to folks about bicycling.

The ideal person would bring a perspective on power and privilege that helps build a diverse team, measured by a set of lived experiences that leads SVBC to be more successful in attracting a broad swath of people to live life joyfully through the bicycle.


It is also important to highlight that we are a group of folks deeply committed to doing one of the most difficult things on the planet – to get people out of their cars and onto bikes in order to solve some of society’s most intractable problems. Responsibilities include:

●      Coordinating and implementing in-class presentations on bicycle and pedestrian safety skills and traffic rules for students as well as online webinars for adults.

●      Coordinating and implementing on-bike and on-foot skills courses for multiple classes of students and adults.

●      Coordinating and implementing social bike rides of 20-100 people

●      Working with organizational and agency partners to implement programs and amplify outreach

●      Training volunteers for education, rides, and bike parking

●      Working with parents to encourage more active transportation outside of school activities.

●      Traveling to school sites and transporting educational and skills course materials.

●      Ensuring that participants in programs are given opportunities to get more involved in the bike movement


Experience + Qualifications

●      Conversational Spanish is highly desired

●      Experience working in immigrant, low-income, or Black and Brown communities

●      Work and/or volunteer experience teaching bicycle education to families and youth is a huge plus

●      League Certified Instructor by League of American Bicyclists is a plus

●      Experience managing partnerships and building relationships that create program commitment and buy-in

●      Experience developing and implementing programs that lead to lasting behavioral change is a plus

●      Experience working with volunteers and understanding how to find and support key community members/volunteers who are interested in becoming more involved in bike culture

●      Detail oriented and ability to prioritize work independently

●      Familiarity with the Bay Area region and its communities

●      Located in or near San Mateo or Santa Clara Counties

●      Candidate must have a valid driver's license for van/truck rental purposes


 Salary and Benefits:

Annual salary set based on the annual Northern California Nonprofit Compensation & Benefits Survey starting at $58,240 and dependent upon experience. Full-time, exempt position with a competitive benefits package including vacation, health insurance, and 401k.
