Over 40,000 teenagers from around the world compete each year for a prestigious FLEX or YES scholarship. The programs, both funded by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provide a one-year scholarship exchange opportunity to the U.S. for competitively selected students from Europe, Eurasia, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

In joining the American Councils team in implementing these programs, the Travel Operations Manager becomes part of an organization known for:

·        Talent: Repatriated 2,000 students, and other U.S. government-funded participants, to 50+ countries at the height of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic; a go-to partner for Department of State secondary school programming

·        Safety Record: Brought 2,000 students safely, in accordance with CDC guidelines, to the U.S. in August 2021 without a single incidence of COVID-19

·        Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion: Dedicated staff committees supported by senior leadership and the Board of Directors to foster DEI among both staff and participants

 

The Travel Operations Manager organizes international program group travel to and from the United States, as well as domestic travel for Washington, DC-based workshops during the students’ program year, with support from the organization’s travel provider. The Travel Manager also coordinates the competitions for these workshops. Responsibilities necessitate that some work be performed during non-business hours such as weekends and/or evenings. The Travel Operations Manager reports to the Director for Secondary School Program Administration.

 

Position Responsibilities

·        Oversee FLEX, YES and CBYX student travel, including:

  • Plan and implement annual program travel cycles for students from 60 countries, workshop travel during the academic year, and year-end events for 200+ students
  • Hire, train and oversee 10-12 temporary airport and hotel staff
  • Supervise staff assigned to travel tasks
  • Develop program travel timelines and travel training materials for students and staff
  • Work with partner organizations and travel agency to ensure that tickets are issued correctly and in a timely manner
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with travel contractors including travel agents, transportation companies, hotels, and meal providers
  • Lead the evaluation of travel cycles and materials for future improvements


·        Develops CEW and WYLET workshop timelines and selection in coordination with program and workshop managers

·        Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONs

·        Fluent English speaking and writing skills

·        Outstanding communication skills

·        Experience implementing group or youth travel

·        Superior organizational skills including proven success in tracking large amounts of data and information

·        Demonstrated leadership skills and supervisory experience

·        Familiarity with government procurement guidelines

·        Ability to manage multiple priorities quickly and effectively

·        Ability to analyze challenges and develop suitable, innovative approaches

·        Ability to work independently while contributing to an overall team effort

·        BA in relevant field (e.g. language, education, international affairs, area studies)

·        Experience working in international education

·        Strong commitment to the program and mission

·        Familiarity with cultures and geography of one or more of the program countries

·        Preferred: Fluency in a FLEX or YES home country language
