Purpose: To implement and manage health services and related polices for the summer camp population at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital. The nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, is able to provide training and education, possesses strong health assessment skills, and works well with people from diverse backgrounds.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for organizing, maintaining and reviewing camper/staff health records for health concerns and immunizations/physical status.
- Nurse will provide services for up to 2 summer camps in close proximity to each other with regular travel between assigned camps
- Effectively communicates with BGCB nurse team and other colleagues, campers, parents, health care providers and BGCB management
- Monitor and communicate evolving state and federal guidance for COVID-19 best practices and safety considerations.
- Provide training and education to staff on common childhood health concerns in addition to allergy prevention and management, asthma management, seizure management, head injury prevention/concussion protocol review, diabetes care, specific camper health and social needs, staff health assessment of campers, accident prevention, first aid in the camp setting, universal precautions, lice and pest management and medication administration delegation to health care supervisor
- Responsible for contacting parents/guardians when relevant to health issues
- Develops and implements individualized health care plans for campers requiring medications and/or medical care while at summer camp
- Responsible for informing camp director, camp health care supervisor and BGCB RN of any specific camper health problems including but not limited to positive COVID-19 cases.
- Implements BGCB summer health and medication policy and procedures including: the collection, documentation and obtaining the required paperwork for medication administration, storage and administration of medications to campers and staff
- Responsible for general and COVID-19 health screenings, administering first aid and emergency care
- Strong understanding of allergic/anaphylactic reactions and able to effectively and independently manage related care, including:
- Identifying the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and providing related nursing care and monitoring
- Administering Epinephrine injections
- Assist in maintaining accurate and detailed medical records including:
- Staff and camper health forms, with special attention to immunization and physical screening compliance
- Medical Log of daily “clinic” visits including injuries and all care provided
- Medication Administration Records
- Incident Report forms
- Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases and ensure compliance with state school and childcare vaccination laws
- Implement and comply with policies established by federal and state law in the area of health services
- Review and implement emergency policies, including in-service health and safety programs for personnel
- Assist in maintaining the inventory of necessary medical supplies and equipment including the First Aid kits.
- Coordinate referrals to health care professionals as needed
- Other related duties as required
