About Segal Family Foundation

At Segal, we believe in a world where development is steered by grassroots leaders and power is shifted into the hands of communities. We work across Sub-Saharan Africa and strive to be true partners to our grantees. We want to change the power dynamics inherent in traditional philanthropy and prove that a new, more equitable, and responsive approach is not only more fair, but more effective. We support 300+ incredible organizations who are finding local and scalable solutions to Sub-Saharan Africa’s most pressing development challenges. We offer our grantee partners financial and capacity building support, aimed at giving them a larger network of peer organizations and like-minded funders to share learnings and new opportunities as well as provide technical expertise.

Our vibrant team of 17 works virtually across continents. We move fast and adapt quickly as we find new and exciting ways to push our mission forward. We’ve got a lot of ambition, and we are looking for team members that will continue to help us punch above our weight.

Our team in Africa is spread across five countries and is responsible for finding and nurturing our community of partners. They also lead in implementing our unique Active Partnership model of funding and capacitating our grantees, including our flagship programs—the Social Impact Incubator and the African Visionary Fellowship. In the US, the team is responsible for supporting our Africa-side operations and is home to our data systems, evaluation, and communications, in addition to our partnerships work.

About the role

This is a new and much-needed role on our team as we need someone to translate the breadth and depth of work we do to the written word. You’ll write articles to influence philanthropy and showcase to the world how amazing our partners are. You’ll ensure that our messaging is clear, compelling, and accurate and aligned to the foundation’s voice. This will advance our vision of becoming the most influential development network across Sub-Saharan Africa, placing local visionaries at the helm.

This person will report to the Director of Communications, with opportunities to work closely with our Director of Partnerships and Director of Program Learning and Impact. This is a full-time position that can be located wherever our hub teams operate in Africa. We currently have staff in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Kigali, Lilongwe, and Nairobi.

Your responsibilities will include:

Writing (60%)

Editing (20%)

  • Copyedit newsletters, programs, and reports coming from each hub and department to make SFF’s messaging polished, professional, and consistent
  • Support team members in writing their own pieces

Pitching to the Media (20%)

Who we are looking for:

  • You are a prolific writer: the words just pour out of you, and you have an appetite for lots of different topics.
  • You have an outstanding portfolio that showcases your writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • You are creative and resourceful: you can take rough notes from a conversation and turn it into a sparkling piece that grabs the reader’s attention.
  • You have impeccable grammar and following the Chicago Manual of Style comes second-nature.
  • You are a gifted storyteller who can also produce technical pieces while hewing closely to SFF’s core messages and authentic voice.
  • You have the capacity to handle multiple writing assignments with rapid turnaround.
  • You have strong attention to detail and accuracy, including the ability to edit and proofread a diversity of written material.
  • You stay abreast of trends in philanthropy and African development so you know when SFF should enter the conversation.
  • You are capable of working independently, with a track record of collaborating with others to make sure multiple perspectives are considered.
  • You are a team player; you’re more eager to contribute and shape the work than you are in getting credit for every byline.
  • You are a go-getter who is persistent and self-driven.
  • You live the values of Segal Family Foundation. Each one is essential to achieve our strategy, and we want to see a history of your engagement with each:
  • Be Bold: You’re not afraid to actively shift the power or to publish an opinion that may be unpopular or controversial.
  • Build Community: Your writing clearly shows how we can achieve more when working together.
  • Learn and Innovate: Although writing is your gift, you are open to revisions and changes to make a piece stronger.
  • Fight for Fairness: You are eager to help elevate the voice of marginalized communities and their agency over the choices that affect them.
  • Trust: You are comfortable not letting perfect get in the way of good enough.
  • You must be comfortable engaging with a hard-working and passionate team both virtually and in-person to forge close-knit relationships.
  • You are a smart thinker who can figure out the best way to message SFF’s content to wield influence in the philanthropic sector.

Why work with us

  • Mission and Impact: We want to change the face of philanthropy while uplifting incredible local leaders (who we like to call rockstars). Every day we support local leaders changing the lives of communities and youth.
  • Career Development: We hire ambitious people and support them to develop their skills and leadership potential. We support each other to grow and propel even further in their career trajectory.
  • Autonomy: We hire smart and talented people and let them lead the way. You will get a team of 17 behind you for support but will be given the autonomy to share your goals for your career trajectory.
  • Work Hard, Play Hard: We put in the extra time and go the extra mile to support our partners. But we also love to laugh, have fun, and enjoy the camaraderie we’ve built amongst our team. We can find some levity even in tough situations.
  • Variety and Adventure: We support 300+ partners across sub-Saharan Africa. Working collaboratively with our team, you will get to experience new cultures, places, and exciting organizations across the continent.
  • Benefits: We believe in supporting the wellbeing of our employees, so we offer health insurance (medical/dental/vision), a 4% pension contribution, generous and flexible paid time off, and support for ongoing professional development.

Other information

  • We will agree on a six-month probation period with mutually agreed-upon performance and learning objectives.
  • Frequent travel should be expected.
  • Segal Family Foundation is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
