About SAJE:

Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE) is 501 c3 located in South Los Angeles. Our mission is to build community leadership and power for economic justice. We focus on tenant rights, healthy housing, and equitable development. SAJE’s current long-term focus is to build a broad-based approach to urban land reform in Los Angeles and to establish a right to the city for all people.  This incorporates efforts to eliminate slum housing, reform redevelopment, forestall displacement, increase tenants’ rights, and establish people’s control over land.  At the same time SAJE invests a substantial amount of its resources in developing the skills and abilities of local residents and SAJE members as leaders, workers, and advocates.


About SAJE’s Equitable Land Use Team: We seek, in our policy work and our organizing with the people of the communities of South Los Angeles, to fight slum housing conditions, defend against real estate speculation and evictions, and expand community residents’ economic and tenant’s rights. Our equitable development work involves partnerships with multiple community based organizations as well as organized labor and government agencies. 


Qualifications for all SAJE staff members:

Ability to communicate verbally in English

Ability to write and read well in English and to type

Ability to use or learn to use widely available and commonly used software and to use a computer

Ability to do simple mathematics and use or learn to use Excel spreadsheets.

Ability to record data and read data in databases

Strong analytical skills

Ability to use a computer for long periods of time

Ability to work well in teams and communicate effectively with other individuals

Stand and walk for long periods of time, lift weights up to 50 pounds

Strong commitment to social justice and an understanding of the challenges facing tenants in working class, immigrant communities 

Good presentation, and speaking skills

Flexible in time and mind: there will be weekly evening commitments and work required during the weekend 

Organized and detail oriented; excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work, strong capacity for independent and collaborative problem solving

Strong communication skills; ability to carry on appropriate conversations and develop productive professional relationships.

Able to perform a variety of duties even with distractions or interruptions, and adjust priorities quickly.

Is warm and positive in their work with colleagues and community members


Qualifications needed to be a SAJE community organizer:

Valid driver’s license and good driving record.  Valid auto insurance must meet SAJE’s required limits.

Commitment to grassroots community or labor organizing and leadership development and base building with low income communities

Strong interpersonal skills; ability to relate well to people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives

Good presentation, and speaking skills & capacity to explain complex information & issues in easy-to-understand manner, including ability to use popular-education techniques

Ability to gain the trust of, motivate, and spark an interest among local residents

Ability to support and increase local residents’ leadership skills 

Disciplined in maintaining high standards in organizing tracking systems

Ability to do simultaneous interpretation 

Have or develop an understanding of progressive politics in relation to racial, economic, and gender equity

Have or develop knowledge of housing law related to tenant rights and history of its development and political history of campaigns related to it

Have or develop knowledge of building code enforcement and health code enforcement

Have or develop an understanding of history of land use in Los Angeles as related to racial and economic equity 

Have or develop detailed understanding of California and City of Los Angeles land use law 

Have an understanding of the importance and nature of strategic planning in advocacy campaigns

Have an understanding of the political structure of the City of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles


Key responsibilities as a community organizer will include some or all (but are not limited to) the following:

  • BUILD OUR BASE
  • Conduct and supervise campaign outreach and recruitment through activities such as door-knocking, surveying, and house visits with potential leaders 
  • Develop leaders in the community: identify new leaders, develop and retain relationships with leaders, engage them in dialog to help us to guide, ground, and shape SAJE’s campaigns
  • Organize, facilitate, and/or supervise grassroots campaign meetings
  • Staff a tenant rights clinic
  • Speak and prepare leaders to speak to media about campaigns
  • DEVELOP CAMPAIGNS
  • Learn, develop, and implement organizing and political strategies with organizing and policy teams
  • Assist Organizing Team in developing and maintaining community partnerships to increase SAJE’s community presence
  • Serve on coalitions as needed
  • Organize and supervise community delegations to key decision-makers and public forums
  • Develop materials to aid in organizing and advance our campaigns (such as fliers and workshop curricula)
  • USE ACCOUNTABILITY & ADMINISTRATIVE BEST PRACTICES
  • Work with your Director to manage calendar, set goals, and create weekly work plan encompassing all organizing activities
  • Help maintain campaign contact and referral database 
  • Maintain records on all building campaigns, door knocking and tenants’ rights clinics
  • Maintain time records on a weekly basis (hours worked and activities conducted)
  • Provide support during SAJE’s weekly Tenant Action Clinic and Educational workshops
  • Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work well in teams
  • As you are able given your language capacities, assist with interpretation and translation
  • You will also participate in other SAJE activities, as needed.  
  • These duties include participating in all SAJE all-staff activities and could also include attending meetings and hearings, outreaching to tenants over other matters, educating tenants about their rights, and other assorted tasks. 
  • Ability to carry heavy weights, stand and walk for long periods of time, use widely available software applications including calendaring applications, computers, and related technical equipment, carry on appropriate conversations and develop productive professional relationships. Must be able to perform a variety of duties even with distractions or interruptions, and adjust priorities quickly.
  • Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work well in teams
  • Other duties, as the organization’s needs determine.
