Just Transition Policy Consultant

Climate Mobilization Project and The Climate Mobilization – our sister 501(c)4 organization – are searching for a temporary Just Transition Policy Consultant to support the development of ambitious frameworks and solutions to the global climate emergency through December 2022. This is a remote, contract role and the consultant will determine their own hours.

The consultant will report to the Programs team directly contribute to our research and organizing programs by completing the deliverables outlined below:

  • Conduct policy coaching sessions and policy development work each month for up to 5 local climate and Just Transition groups that are members of Climate Mobilization Network
  • Provide more intensive policy development and training support to Climate Mobilization partner groups in Sonoma County, CA and Acton, MA
  • Organize Just Transition policy trainings for Climate Mobilization’s cohort of community organizing coaches who work with Network member groups
  • Research, review and aggregate policy resources that may be of interest to Network member groups
  • Support the development of policy recommendations and the analysis of policy, including the development of policy documents

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent):

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of Just Transition campaigning or organizing experience;
  • 2 years of experience working in a research, advocacy, or policy-focused role(s) with focus on environmental, climate, and/or social justice issues;
  • Deep commitment to environmental equity, particularly for frontline communities disparately impacted by policies and neglect; 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local government policies and processes;
  • A strong, justice-centered understanding of the causes and impacts of climate emergency and the failures of gradualist climate policies and institutions; 
  • Collaborative, creative, interdisciplinary, and community-oriented approach to developing climate solutions, with a focus on what is necessary, rather than what is politically “possible”
  • experience organizing and providing policy support alongside frontline BIPOC, low-income, communities; Experience working with youth-led organizing;
  • Proficiency in GSuite including Google Sheets;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to distill and explain complex information, data, and technical details to a variety of audiences and partners;
  • Ability to identify equity and opportunity gaps to build clear arguments for policies rooted in principles of equity;
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple priorities and to connect multiple topics and issues in service of improving equity outcomes;
  • Demonstrated capacity for translating ideas into action;
  • Experience problem-solving around the ways in which white supremacy, anti-blackness, and/or lack of Indigenous and Global South solidarity shows up in US climate organizing.
  • Strong political analysis, including a deep understanding of white supremacy and white supremacy culture and experience organizing on intersections of climate and racial justice; 
  • Understanding how structures including the police and military uphold environmental injustice
  • An analysis of hierarchies that come up in organizing based on race, class, gender, etc.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ or Advanced degree in environmental policy, environmental science, geography, political science, or a related subject
  • Sense of humor, exhibiting grace under pressure

Hours and Pay:

This contract role will range from 10 to 20 hours a month of work depending on organizational need, with at least 10 hours guaranteed. Pay is $75 an hour, negotiable. Consultant can determine their own schedule. This is a remote position.
