ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

Founded in 2011, Mara Elephant Project’s (MEP) mission is to protect elephants and their habitats across the Greater Mara Ecosystem in southwest Kenya. MEP started as an anti-poaching and human wildlife conflict mitigation project. Since then, we have expanded to include cutting edge research and conservation programs. We now operate in an expanded area and establish and run community development projects, continue our elephant collaring and monitoring program (over 50 elephants to date) and provide research outputs for national government and partners across Africa. We are a proud Kenyan organization that has provided employment, training and education for 83 staff members.


THE OPPORTUNITY:

Mara Elephant Project is looking for an experienced grant writer to join our team. Our organizations how grown and diversified our funding base made up of mostly individual donors and family foundations through focused communications and relationship building efforts. We are now ready to expand our development department to include a grant focused effort that contributes substantial funding to MEP’s ever-expanding research and conservation technology efforts. 


We are looking for a motivated applicant that is able to identify and cultivate new grant opportunities, manage grant application guidelines and craft original narratives that ensure a high success rate. They will spearhead the management of all grant applications from start to finish and contribute the well edited narrative and visuals to ensure an appealing entry.


We are looking for someone who is highly organized and willing to work with an international team under strict deadlines. You will be required to interface with both MEP USA and MEP Kenya and communicate effectively with top management in the USA and Kenya. A high success rate is expected from this job, and a willingness to adapt to a changing funding environment. We’re looking for candidates with a proven, verifiable and demonstrable track record raising grants of $200,000 or more as part of a grant program of $1 million or more. The grant writer will report to the Chief Executive Officer and work closely with the MEP USA Executive Director and the Director of Research and Conservation. You will also be regularly collaborating with the CFO and GIS team. 


RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE:

·      Grant Research

o   Research grant opportunities from government and non-government agencies based on specific funding objectives

o   Conduct detailed research that is donor informed and clearly aligned with MEP’s objectives; clearly showing a high success rate 

o   Prospect new opportunities for funding and develop personal relationships to increase success rate

·      Grant Management

o   Develop a grant management schedule that is easy to implement 

o   Consistently make deadlines and maintain a calendar

o   Regularly communicate with co-workers about requirements and delegate tasks

o   Maintain a positive relationships with funders and other stakeholders

o   Spearhead funder communications and interactions

o   Manage researchers or interns as needed 

o   Ability to develop and track KPIs for grant and impact reports

·      Grant Writing & Editing 

o   Draft compelling grant proposals and supporting documents

o   Independently write narratives and manage departmental contributions

o   Edit to ensure the grant submission is concision, clear and includes compelling storytelling

o   Ability to follow the MEP grammatical and communications guidelines

·      Reporting

o   Assists with the completion of monthly, quarterly and annual reports that will need content writing and copyediting

o   Maintain a reporting schedule and submit on-time reports

o   Create compelling grant reports that encourage donor engagement and trust

·      Funding Management

o   Contribute to the donor management software system

o   Contribute to organizational communications, including donor materials, external communications or briefings, reports and more


PREFERED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

Must be enthusiastic, professional, detail oriented and willing to learn quickly and take the lead. We’re looking for candidates with at least 5 years of experience working as a grant writer with a proven successful track record securing grant funding that can handle both detailed government grant applications and non-government organization narratives focused on conservation research and technology. A degree in conservation, environmental science, development/communications or technology is preferred. We’re looking for candidates with strong written and oral communications skills that are familiar with giving detailed presentations and pitches. You must be willing to adapt to a fast and sometimes ambiguous environment all while operating under tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will be willing to travel to meet funders, spend time at MEP’s headquarters in Kenya and the USA office.
