Summary: 

The Director of Strategic Litigation (DSL) will serve as a key strategist and architect of the litigation priorities for the SPLC, with shared responsibility for the leadership of the SPLC’s legal strategy at a time when the work of the SPLC has never been more vital. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer (CLO), and as a key member of the SPLC senior leadership team and with hands-on engagement in litigation across the organization, the DSL will assist the CLO in leading the SPLC’s litigation team, impact litigation strategy and case selection, and related operations in collaboration with legal leadership and staff. The DSL will both supervise and be an active member of key case teams driving some of the most complex and weighty cases on the SPLC docket. The DSL will be responsible as a thought partner and collaborative visionary for shaping, managing, and driving litigation strategy and will assist in managing a strategic, smart, and innovative litigation docket for the SPLC at the federal, state, and regional level. The DSL may serve as a spokesperson for the SPLC on key initiatives and must be an excellent communicator. Collaboration across issues, areas, and practice groups within the SPLC will be required. The DSL must be deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position serves as a trusted advisor to the senior leadership team of a prominent social justice organization, with over 350 staff in five states and the District of Columbia.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Work with the CLO and Director of Legal Management and in collaboration with the Center’s Executive and Leadership Teams actively engage in the implementation of the Center’s strategic plan, impact goals and objectives;
  • Will be responsible as a thought partner and collaborative visionary for shaping, managing, and driving litigation strategy and will assist in managing a strategic, smart, and innovative litigation docket for the SPLC at the federal, state, and regional level;
  • Supervise and be an active member of key case teams driving some of the most complex and weighty cases on the SPLC docket;
  • Manage the litigation teams, providing mentoring and coaching to support the work;
  • Hire, train, establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign duties, and conduct performance reviews;
  • May serve as a spokesperson for the SPLC on key initiatives; and
  • Other duties as assigned to meet SPLC needs.

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree;
  • At least 10 years of complex litigation experience, which includes experience managing and supervising litigation and personnel;
  • At least 5 years of managerial experience of a team of legal professionals, managing performance, encouraging professional development, and setting high standards;
  • Proven ability to co-create and execute a complex vision for litigation priorities;
  • Experience working deeply in communities and with a diverse array of stakeholders; and
  • Experience handling all stages of litigation, from complaint initiation to resolution through trial or settlement, and be able to provide strategic guidance and feedback to the attorneys litigating the SPLC’s cases.

  • Highly strategic mindset and approach to litigation and demonstrated organizational acumen, strong analytical skills, and the ability to grasp important and complex legal and strategic issues facing the organization;
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to mentor and supervise legal leadership staff;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic, innovative, and high-energy environment;
  • Initiative and ability to work collaboratively and efficiently;
  • Excellent and consistent attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines;
  • Strong organizational skills follow- through and flexibility around changing priorities and deadlines;
  • Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; and
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning. 

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.

Due to COVID-19, our offices are currently closed and staff is working remotely. If this position is filled while our offices remain closed, the new employee will work remotely until the offices reopen. We are not asking newly hired employees to relocate while the offices are closed.
