Position Summary

The Managing Director of Operations & Compliance will join the team at KIPP Northern California during an exciting phase of growth and organizational development, as we scale from 17 to 20+ schools in the Bay Area and Stockton. This is a senior leadership role that will partner with the Chief Operating Officer in setting and executing on our vision for operational excellence in our schools, grounded in the belief that strong operations is the foundation for joyful, academically excellent schools. They will partner closely with leaders across the organization to ensure that operational systems are built to last, and that organizational goals are aligned and supported by regional and school operations teams.

The Managing Director of Operations & Compliance will oversee two departments, Regional Operations and Public Accountability & Compliance, as well as our temporary Pandemic Operations team. They will manage 3-5 direct reports, with an overall central team of approximately 10 FTEs. Their leadership and impact will extend to our network of 75 school-based operations staff, including close partnership with our Directors of School Operations (DSOs), who lead operations at each school site. 

The Managing Director of Operations & Compliance will report to the Chief Operating Officer and work from our downtown Oakland office (blend of in-person and remote work), with occasional travel to our schools and local communities throughout the Bay Area and Stockton. The role is available immediately. 

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • 10+ years of professional work experience, including demonstrated results leading in at least one of the following functional areas: system-level operations across multiple locations/sites, K-12 school operations, K-12 public accountability and compliance.
  • 5+ years of professional experience managing direct reports, people managers and teams.
  • K-12 education experience required. 

Knowledge & Skills required:

  • Demonstrated understanding of K-12 public education and school operations.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; able to build effective and collaborative relationships and influence diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly skilled at strategic planning, progress monitoring, and risk and fiscal management; able to own the vision and direction setting for core operational work.
  • Exemplary critical thinking skills; proven track record of analyzing complex issues, driving through obstacles, making decisions, and delivering strong results.
  • Equitable and effective leader and people manager; experienced in leading teams and working cross-functionally with other leaders to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Brings a racial equity, inclusion and belonging lens to the work and a commitment to anti-racism.
  • Passionate about educational equity and KIPP’s mission, vision and values.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Effectively Manage Operations and Compliance Departments

  • Set multi-department vision and direction, overseeing the development of department priorities, plans, and team structures, and leading teams to deliver against goals and expectations.
  • Effectively manage, coach and develop direct reports (department leads) with an assets-based approach, cultivating a collaborative and inclusive team culture that empowers direct reports, and where diverse backgrounds and perspectives are respected and valued.  
  • Partner with department leaders on developing diverse leadership pipelines within teams.
  • Provide fiscal oversight of Regional Operations and Public Accountability & Compliance teams, and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws. Operate at all times in accordance with the organization’s values, mission, vision, and plans.

Oversee Regional Operations & Vision for Operational Excellence

  • Own the vision for excellence in school operations, partnering with the Regional Ops team and schools to set operational goals, create clear school operations standards and processes, progress monitor results, and coach regional and school teams to close gaps on key operational goals like enrollment and attendance. 
  • Oversee the strategy and execution of ongoing School Operations professional development at KIPP NorCal. Evaluate development needs, create and facilitate training, and run strong Communities of Practice to invest in and develop leaders in each of our core school-based operations roles: Director of School Operations (DSO), Data & Student Information Manager (DSIM), and Business Operations Manager (BOM).
  • Oversee and evolve our talent systems and structures to ensure our schools are staffed with strong, growing Ops leaders who are systems-minded and results-oriented. Develop deep relationships and partnership with Principals on the hiring, role clarity, performance management, and ongoing development of DSOs and other school operations roles.
  • Oversee and/or directly negotiate critical contracts to secure services and resources for schools, in areas such as authorizer/district MOUs, food service, and transportation.
  • Lead regional risk management and safety strategy, including procurement of regional insurance policies, stewarding legal claims, and overseeing school safety and emergency preparedness.

Oversee Public Accountability & Compliance

  • Support the Director of Public Accountability & Compliance in the creation of a new department vision for compliance oversight and improvement, and annual execution of a transparent regional system of public accountability.
  • Ensure that KIPP NorCal meets all public program and reporting requirements associated with receiving state, federal and local funds, and all compliance requirements associated with KIPP NorCal’s district and county agreements.
  • Work cross-functionally to elevate risks, identify strategic investments, remove obstacles, and ensure alignment and resources to complete critical compliance work.

Oversee COVID-19 Health & Safety

  • Partner with the Chief Operating Officer, and other regional leaders, to define and evolve our COVID-19 Response strategy as we navigate the journey from pandemic to endemic.
  • Manage a temporary team of centralized specialists that provide direct COVID response support to our schools (contact tracing, testing), grounded in our strategy and goals for next school year.
  • Integrate COVID Health & Safety into regional operations and DSO training and development.

Disrupt Racial Inequities 

  • Actively champion our commitment to anti-racism through ongoing inquiry, implementation of systems and structures to advance equity, and contributing towards our vision for DEI while holding others accountable to doing the same.
  • Demonstrate the courage and skill to respectfully interrupt conversations, behaviors and systems laden with unconscious, implicit or explicit bias. 

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses, and hold meetings in different spaces. Traditionally, much of the day involves sitting. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-20 lbs.

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: Office environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Occasional classroom/school environment and travel. In an emergency context (e.g., pandemic), work may be conducted virtually fully or partially for extended periods of time or longer, and the expectation is that the individual will establish a productive, remote work environment (e.g., ability to stay connected through different technology means). It may require remote work as current public health guidelines warrant.

Classification

Full-time, exempt position based on regional support office calendar and time-off policy.
