Summary:

The Director of Communications plans, develops and implements the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s (RICADV) public relations and strategic communications activities. These activities include the development and implementation of special events, media relations, public awareness activities and web and social media strategy to boost engagement and reach. This full-time position reports to the executive director. This is a new role within the RICADV’s current communications team structure.

Specific responsibilities:

Develop, implement and evaluate the RICADV’s strategic communications plan, including:

1. Strengthen and build relationships with news media outlets, issue press statements, improve media monitoring systems; supervise the communications manager

2. Develop and direct several annual statewide public awareness campaigns, including the Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign, Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month campaign, prevention/men’s campaign and the statewide Helpline’s publicity efforts to raise public awareness about domestic violence services and create an attitude of intolerance to domestic violence; solicit and manage sponsorships to support these public awareness efforts and advertising

3. Create graphic design content as needed for large-scale projects, including public awareness campaigns (i.e., billboard and large, on-site venue ads), and smaller scale projects (i.e., report publications and brochures); oversee production of the RICADV’s annual publications calendar (e.g., brochures, reports, mailing materials, fact sheets and other materials as needed)

4. Provide training, technical assistance and consulting with other organizations, including other state domestic violence coalitions/organizations and news media outlets about domestic violence dynamics, strategic communications and/or news reporting best practices; update and promote the utilization of the online guide for journalists website

5. Work across RICADV teams, including the policy and advocacy team to develop legislative-specific campaigns and materials during legislative session, and the prevention team to promote initiatives such as Ten Men and the R.I. Domestic Violence Prevention Fund

6. Manage the communications team budget and communications-related metrics, e.g., Google Analytics and social media engagement and reach

7. Ensure promotion of RICADV member agencies’ local events and initiatives; oversee activities of the statewide public awareness community engagement strategy committee (PACES)

8. Represent the RICADV on national committees, such as the northeast chapter of “No More” and the National Network to End Domestic Violence, and fill in for the executive director as needed for public speaking events, including media interviews and community events

9. Work in partnership with other RICADV staff, member agencies, the RICADV’s survivors task force SOAR (Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships) and others to meet the mission of the RICADV; other duties as assigned

Requirements:

The Director of Communications must have a minimum of seven years of experience in public relations, or equivalent experience. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills required. Proven experience working with news media, directing and developing publications and multimedia campaigns, graphic design, public speaking and managing staff desired. Ability to work independently, take initiative, work with diverse groups and as part of a team required. A passion for working in the domestic violence movement is a plus.
