The Illinois Prison Project (IPP) is a young nonprofit organization in Chicago that seeks to reduce mass incarceration by providing legal services to individuals incarcerated in the Illinois Department of Corrections. We focus on novel and creative approaches to prison reduction including mass commutation campaigns, sentence restructuring, public education, and advocacy.

 

The Illinois Prison Project is looking for a dynamic Assistant Director to join our Education team. This position would have a start date of January 1, 2022.


Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Education team
  • Supervise the Education team members, including a Program Manager, two Community Navigators, and an Education Intern
  • Develop, streamline, and improve systems, procedures, and organizational structures to the administration and workflow of the Education team
  • Support IPP’s work to establish and maintain positive working relationships with community members, allies, advocates, organizations, and IDOC staff
  • Manage the Education calendar
  • Oversee the Ambassadors Program, including the interviewing process, cohort curriculum development, and facilitator contacts
  • Collaborate with the Communications Team and Direct Representation Team on systemic advocacy efforts to reduce mass incarceration
  • Regularly track and report Educational Team’s outreach efforts for grant reporting
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree or have had an equally effective and relevant alternative educational or professional experience
  • Have 6 years of experience in the fields of education, criminal legal reform, operations, social services, or other related field
  • Have a minimum of two years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Be comfortable creating and maintaining relationships with advocates, allies, community members, and agency staff
  • Demonstrate a deep commitment to issues related to long-term incarceration
  • Have prior professional or lived experience in the criminal legal reform movement
  • Have excellent personal and professional communication skills 
  • Have ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Have flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as required
  • Have ability to commute to IPP’s office in Chicago and travel throughout the state for prison visits, parole board hearings, and other events.

 

Location: A hybrid work environment, including working remotely and out of IPP’s office at 53 West Jackson Blvd in Chicago, IL.
