As the PeopleOps lead, you will be a partner in building an organizational infrastructure that will support the Center for Civic Design’s work as it grows.

In our first 8 years, the Center for Civic Design has tackled some of the hardest problems in running elections, built a nationally recognized set of best practices for election design, and attracted an amazing team of civic designers and researchers. As we continue to grow, it’s time to build an organization that can support the team, so they can do great work.

We’re looking for someone who loves our mission, loves helping people and diverse teams develop, and can be a key management partner in taking our organization and team policies and procedures to the next stage.

Responsibilities

This is a new position, so there’s room for you to help shape what the job looks like as you bring a focus to the people who are the Center for Civic Design.

  • Advise the director and board on what’s needed to keep CCD a great place to work and meet the goals of the organization.
  • Keep policies updated and develop procedures needed, to keep the day-to-day life of the organization ticking over (working with the director).
  • Develop processes to help CCD keep itself accountable for its mission and goals, including inclusion and equity (working with the director and operations leads).
  • Support the team on a day-to-day basis and answer questions about benefits and policies.
  • Manage HR systems. We have web-based service partners for our payroll, 401(k), and health insurance. You’ll work with the director and bookkeeper to manage these systems and ensure compliance with state laws. The systems are mostly self-service, so this is easy, requiring only periodic maintenance. With a fully remote team, we are registered as employers in 5+ states.
  • Lead onboarding of new team members, giving them the special attention they need as they learn about elections, our work, and their role.
  • Develop professional development plans with the team and work with each person as they work towards their goals.
  • Help plan and run bi-annual team retreats where we review progress, plan the future, and share time as a team (working with the director and operations leads).

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in HR/PeopleOps, preferably as a Generalist or HRBP
  • Strong listening, collaboration, coaching, and people management skills
  • Empathetic “people person” with a well-developed point of view on what makes a healthy culture
  • Demonstrated ability to nurture remote teams preferred
  • Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws
  • Experienced working with small, growing organizations
  • Experience with nonprofits with design/research teams preferred
  • Clear communicator with a passion for employee engagement
  • Able to work effectively on a remote team and complete projects independently
  • Tech-savvy and experience with digital HR systems i.e. Gusto, Guideline, etc.
  • Must be located in the United States. Eligible to vote in US elections preferred
