The Riverdale Y (Riverdale Y), situated in a 55,000 square foot facility in Riverdale, (Bronx), New York, makes a difference to the thousands of clients it serves annually. It caters to a multi-generational and diverse community. The Riverdale Y enriches lives by cultivating universally-shared values central to Jewish life, through educational, cultural, wellness and service programs for all.

To keep pace with its anticipated growth, its expanding programs and the changing needs of the community, the Riverdale Y seeks a creative and dynamic leader as its next CEO. The agency is funded through its memberships and programs, and by UJA-NY and various governmental organizations. Moving forward, it seeks additional support from individuals, foundations and businesses. The next CEO will be an experienced fundraiser to support the evolution of the Riverdale Y.The CEO reports to the Board of Directors.

The Ideal Candidate

The CEO will lead by example. The CEO will be responsible for implementing the mission and vision of the Riverdale Y, defining its post-pandemic strategic direction, and ensuring that resources are in place to accomplish its mission. The successful candidate will possess a track record of supporting innovation, successful fundraising, experience with all levels of government funding, and inspirational leadership. Working with the senior leadership team and the Board, the CEO will define the Riverdale Y's priorities and direction, set goals for the organization and work systematically to meet them. She/he/they will raise the profile of the Riverdale Y to reflect its value in the community as an important resource and a community convener.

The CEO will have a passion for the Jewish community yet will understand the value of welcoming all religions and cultures to the Riverdale Y. The CEO will understand Jewish culture and traditions and will be familiar with the Riverdale Jewish community as well as the greater Bronx community that it serves. The CEO will be committed to Riverdale Y’s core values.

As a key priority, the CEO will actively identify and connect to potential donors and promote vigorous fundraising to build its financial reserves. He/she/they will secure resources, budget and allocate them appropriately, holding him/herself/themselves accountable for the financial health of the organization.

Strategic Visioning

  • Proactively direct conversations to address the changing role of community space post-Covid and
  • understand that community building can take place in many venues beyond the facilities
  • Balance the Jewish needs and offerings of the Riverdale Y with the needs of the Bronx
  • community that it serves
  • Develop new revenue streams to support the growing needs of the agency

Board/Volunteer Development

  • Develop and work with the Board, ensuring that Board committees and efforts are well-organized
  • Develop lay involvement and committees as a funnel toward Board membership
  • Demonstrate experience recruiting and working in partnership with the Board of Directors and
  • leveraging time, talent, and resources of Board members

Fundraising

  • In collaboration with the Director of Development, proactively identify and cultivate corporate,
  • individual, community and foundation sponsors
  • Solicit individual and foundation gifts
  • Experience serving as the “face” of the organization in order to attract philanthropy

Innovation

  • Innovative and supportive of innovative ideas. The business model with its traditional programs is
  • not enough to support the growing fixed costs and budget of the Riverdale Y
  • Encourage creative and scalable program ideas
  • Open to new ideas that are staff or community generated

Partnerships/Community Presence

  • Maintain and build partnerships with local Jewish, secular, government and philanthropic
  • organizations in order to build upon the reputation of the Riverdale Y as a community convener
  • Raise the profile of the Riverdale Y within the Jewish community and beyond to enhance
  • philanthropic support
  • Work together with UJA and JCC Association to support agency goals

Management and Operations

  • at hiring employees who are subject matter experts and allowing the talented staff to
  • flourish with appropriate levels of guidance
  • Promote a culture of accountability
  • Promote staff development
  • Encourage a respectful and diverse workplace and foster trust among colleagues
  • Encourage the implementation of systems to assist in the delivery of services to clients
  • Actively encourage cross-department collaboration
  • Knowledge of New York city government, state and federal agencies and funding a plus
  • Analytical problem solver with a willingness to include input from other stakeholders
  • Experience with collective bargaining units helpful
  • Experience in marketing, facilities an advantage
  • Communication skills for external and internal communication are essential with an understanding
  • of social media helpful
  • Implement an agency-wide performance review process

Financial Acumen

  • In collaboration with the CFO, manage the agency’s budget and ensure that it is a financially
  • viable, sustainable organization with the resources to meet current and projected program growth
  • Ensure that the Riverdale Y maintains compliance with relevant state and federal law and
  • regulations and with generally accepted accounting practices
  • Knowledge of budgeting and financial management is crucial
  • Ensure quarterly financial reviews to inform any appropriate mid-year program changes
  • Use and understand financial data to implement cost-effective ways to deliver state-of-the-art
  • programs to clients

Key Credentials and Personal Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (an advanced degree a plus) and experience in Nonprofit
  • Management, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Law or its equivalent
  • 5-10 years senior strategic leadership and management experience at a non-profit organization
  • Knowledge of Riverdale communal organizations
  • Proven strong record of successful fundraising strategies and successes
  • Commitment to creating a workplace that reflects the values of diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Experience and references from successful work with not-for-profit board and lay committees
  • Experience with government funded programs a plus
  • Experience with Human Resources issues, such as job descriptions, performance
  • management and employee relations
  • Financial management skills and experience required
  • Knowledge and understanding of cultural Judaism
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A “can do” positive attitude, a sense of humor, integrity and impeccable work ethic
  • Knowledge of Office Suite and Excel required
  • Some knowledge of real estate management would be helpful
  • Relationships with other JCCs or YM-YWHA s a plus

Salary Range: $190,000+ $225,000
