The Center for Appellate Litigation (CAL) seeks to hire a full-time Client Advocate Coordinator & Conditions of Confinement Project Supervisor.

CAL is a fifty-attorney, non-profit public defense law firm dedicated to fighting injustice through exceptional advocacy and enduring compassion for every client. We represent indigent New Yorkers convicted of crimes in Manhattan and the Bronx in their criminal appeals and other post-conviction proceedings. We envision a post-conviction process grounded in our clients’ humanity, and we pursue dynamic approaches to serve our clients and challenge the status quo.

CAL’s team of committed Client Advocates (CAs) stands on the front lines of this holistic approach to client advocacy and plays an essential role in delivering a wealth of important services to our clients. CAs, who often join CAL right out of college, work directly with our clients, implementing our Conditions of Confinement Project, which advocates for clients negotiating the challenges of incarceration. CAs also support a variety of other specialized projects at CAL, including our Immigrant Justice Project, SORA Project, Parole Advocacy Project, Plea Project, and Survivors Advocacy Practice. Please see our website to learn more about these practices.

Responsibilities

·       Oversee CAL’s Conditions of Confinement Project and serve as full-time supervisor of two or more CAs who work primarily in the Conditions of Confinement Project as well as interns working for the project.

·       Pursue system-wide advocacy towards the betterment of prison conditions in New York State, including pursuing legislative initiatives in coordination with other prison advocacy service providers.

·       Maintain personal caseload of Conditions of Confinement Project work.

·       Serve as coordinator for all CAL CAs. This role will require meeting regularly with all CAs; coordinating with supervisors of specialized projects, other members of management and staff to ensure that CA workload is adequate, balanced, and manageable; and maintaining an ongoing understanding of the internal and external issues that affect CAs at CAL, liaising with members of management of those issues, and advocating for policies within management that support and promote CA work.

·       Coordinate all hiring, onboarding, and substantive training for new CAs, exit interviews for departing CAs, and periodic “stay” interviews for CAs midway through their tenure at CAL (CAs are afforded two-to-three year terms at CAL before advancing to other professional interests).

·       Serve in a training and mentorship role for CAs by implementing regularly-scheduled “peer support” meetings, “brown bag” lunches, and similar support networks, formal or informal, to ensure that CAs feel supported, professionally and personally, during their time at CAL.

·       Salary will be commensurate with experience.

This is a full-time salaried position. Full Covid vaccination is required. Current office policy requires in-office work at least three days a week.

Qualifications

·       Experience working with incarcerated populations, especially in the NY DOCCS system, and a demonstrated empathy for working on behalf of people who have been convicted of serious offenses and advocating on their behalf;

·       Experience as a manager or in a role that required close, ongoing interaction with management;

·       Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, advocacy, and leadership skills;

·       Excellent written and oral advocacy skills;

·       High degree of literacy in technology;

·       Advanced degree (MSW or JD) preferred;

·       Spanish fluency is highly preferred.
