Background: 

The American Friends Service Committee promotes a longstanding Quaker concern for the causes and impact of human migration. Since 1988, the Immigrant Rights Program based in New Jersey has worked to increase the protection of the rights of immigrants and refugees through legal representation, community education, community organizing, monitoring of rights, advocacy, and training.  

Since 1996, the AFSC has provided legal counseling and representation to thousands of immigrants, including children and youth, people in detention, survivors of domestic violence and other crimes, asylum seekers, and individual who have faced long struggles to obtain legal status. AFSC has also conducted training sessions and education to immigrant communities, social service providers and attorneys in New Jersey

 Summary of Principal Responsibilities:

The Immigrant Children and Youth Social Worker will be part of AFSC’s Community Justice team that provides representation to unaccompanied immigrant children and/or similarly situated youth in removal proceedings and before the Asylum Office in cases where representation is initiated before age 21.

The Social Worker will provide intensive case management for clients, working toward enrolling clients in school, and securing referrals for services such as medical and mental health treatment, housing, public benefits, and counseling for particularly vulnerable clients and their families. As AFSC staff support unaccompanied children and similarly situated youth through immigration processes and defend them from deportation, the Social Worker will provide additional assistance needed to reach stability. AFSC staff are currently working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities: The key responsibilities of the Immigrant Children and Youth Social Worker include the following:

  1. Provide active case management to AFSC clients and their families. Case management includes initial intake or needs assessment; referrals, assisting in scheduling appointments; and providing accompaniment and advocacy around accessing essential and hard-to-obtain services.
  2. Locate suitable resources for unaccompanied children and similarly situated youth, including counseling programs.
  3. Provide information and resources for partners serving immigrant children and youth and/or their families.
  4. Meet with AFSC legal staff to determine specific client needs and priorities.
  5. Perform supervision and evaluation of social work interns as appropriate.
  6. Meet with supervisor regularly and submit written reports on activities and accomplishments related to the responsibilities of the position.
  7. Maintain updated information in client database.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. License or appropriate certification from accredited social work program.
  2. Familiarity with existing resources and public benefit programs in New Jersey.
  3. Ability to recognize signs of trauma and mental illness.
  4. Commitment to and experience in working with and providing services in diverse and multicultural settings.
  5. Experience working with children and youth preferred.
  6. Interest and passion for working with diverse immigrant communities.
  7. Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  8. Bilingual English and Spanish.
  9. Some familiarity with immigration law and policy preferred.
  10. Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  11. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.

Compensación

COMPENSATION: Salary Range 15 – Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
