Who we are

Organizing Resilience is a strategy hub for organizers, policy experts, funders, and government folks from across the country who organize through climate shocks to build more powerful organizations, increase the effectiveness of direct relief efforts, shift narratives about climate disasters, and build capacity for policy campaigns that win meaningful victories for communities most affected by disasters. Housed at the Amalgamated Foundation, OR is an incubator for game-changing ideas that respond to the urgent climate moment, led by working people and communities of color around the country. Climate disasters like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and extreme heat are key moments for OR’s work, where power structures break open and can be renegotiated.

What we’re looking for

We’re seeking a Special Assistant to join OR’s team. Reporting to the Lead Strategist, Ginny Goldman, a longtime organizer and political strategist, and working closely with others on OR’s Core Team, the Special Assistant will play a critical role in driving OR’s internal operations and supporting the Lead Strategist in her internal and external engagements.

The ideal candidate is a generalist who can be relied upon to be highly organized, detail oriented, curious, calm, and thoughtful even in tense moments. It is important that the person in this role shares OR’s values of centering care and relief in a strategy to build power in the face of climate disasters. This role requires great judgment: the ability to to listen and take in information, organize it, and proactively propose next steps that meet the interests of different stakeholders. We’re looking for someone who brings a range of experiences that prepare them to work in a fast-paced setting, adapt to changing circumstances, and be part of a team aiming for ambitious goals.

Areas of responsibility include:

  • Scheduling:
  • Manage the Lead Strategist’s calendar to align with their priorities, including call preparation and note taking/tracking.
  • Travel and events strategy & planning:
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners to identify goals for the Lead Strategists’s participation in events (e.g. conferences, speaking opportunities, fundraising meetings), prepare documents/presentations in advance, identify and research key stakeholders for the Lead Strategist to connect with, and ensure that logistics are smooth.
  • Play a lead role in coordinating document management for agendas and other materials for internal OR meetings and events, when the Lead Strategist is the leader of the meeting.
  • Book individual travel for the Lead Strategist and handle invoicing and supplies on their behalf.
  • Document and contact management:
  • Develop and continuously update organized lists of OR’s contacts.
  • Develop and maintain systems for organizing OR’s documents.
  • Invoicing and vendor relationships:
  • Track expenditures and produce monthly reports against the operating budget.
  • Work closely with administrative staff at the Amalgamated Foundation to track and update contracts; track and submit vendor invoices for processing; interface directly with vendors to answer questions regarding contract and invoice processing.
  • Rapid response support:
  • During disaster events, provide administrative support and technical assistance to the OR team and on-the ground organizing groups, as needed.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Experience working in a staffing capacity for a political candidate, policy leader, professor, or other principal preferred, in a paid or unpaid capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear and brief written work that relies on strong critical thinking skills.
  • High capacity for independent work and the ability to propose and develop ideas.
  • Relentless follow-through - you build trust with internal and external stakeholders by completing objectives on time.
  • Strategic perspective - you anticipate opportunities and challenges and prepare multiple options for action.
  • Strong attention to detail - you don’t let things fall through the cracks.
  • Systems thinking - you organize yourself and others into systems that are easy to use and understand.
  • Excellent communications skills across multiple medium.

Role structure, compensation, and location

This is a full-time role housed at the Amalgamated Foundation with an annual salary range of $60,000 - $75,000 commiserate with experience. The role requires synchronous work with the Lead Strategist and being available during daytime working hours (central time).

Finalist candidates for this role will be asked to participate in an in-person interview in Houston.
